jack! jack! jack! your booood-y Hey whats up my fellow house masters!! I'm new wave Dave! an original party person from back in the days, Man oh man I miss those days! for me it all started in my senior year in high school(1982-83). I attended hyde park career academy on 62nd and stoney island and was living with my aunt cecilia at the time. One day some kids in my r.o.t.c. class were telling me about this place called the playground, they said it was this cool spot where all the young people went to dance, around this same time the local radio stations WGCI & WBMX were introducing us to a unique kind of dance music every friday night. It was a kind of music that had more bass and snare drums than disco (which I love) it also had singing in it but it was sung faster than R&B, at the time I did'nt know what it was called, but I do know a whole lot of import music was becoming populer, songs like martin circus, bostich, computer games & rock lobster. But this chicago sound was taking over, especially in the schoolyard during lunch period, kids were briniging they're cassette players outside and dancing in front of the school or in jackson park across the street from the schools, new dances were being created once a week. Soon big red letters were splashed across big white poster boards and hung up on light post around town, these were ways the playground was beggining to advertise the friday and saturday night parties. For $5 you could go down to 1427 S. Michigan Ave.,wait in a long-ass line, one for girls the other for boys and as you got closer to the entrance you could hear the bass thumping. Once inside you realized that this place was once some kind of wharehouse or loft or something becuase it had those kinda windows and big concreate podiums everywhere. the first thing you'd see is a bunch of dancing young people (mostly high school students) to your right was that crowded ass coat check (which still owes me a vinyl/pleather jacket which was lost back in 1985), to your left were restrooms and a bar which sold kool-aid and potato chips, to the very far right against the wall was a small black stage which you'd trip over if you were'nt careful (people rarely danced on this stage) and in front of you, just beyond the dance floor was an elevated D.J. booth surrounded by a black wood panel which usually was commanded by farly"funkin" keith. Farley was the man! he usually wore a black T-shirt and jeans and was very concentrated on his mixing (he rarely looked up). Few people know that the playgrounds owners were twin brothers, I never knew they're names and one is father to television and movie actress Lisa Raye.
I partied at the playground for the full time that it existed (1983-1985) some of my fondest memories of house as well as import and radio top-40 music were created at the playground, i remember all the little cliques and dance groups that were there; the spy guys (jackie, sonny & tyrone) Ice mike & the sick boys, the rich lovers, the slick lovers, the disorderly spies, the smurfs, the actors & mechanics, the polo boys & polo girls, the floor masters,
S.O.-13,the lost children of house, the red hot lovers,dancer#1 & dancer#2,the fancy dancers, the All stars and so many others I cant even remember.
By 1985 the playground for some reason changed its name to the candy store, by then I was hitting clubs like U.S. studios, the power plant and the newly opened marz bar on rush st. not too long after that (I'm not sure which year) the playground closed down, I was hanging out on rush on a saturady evening when one of my fellow party persons told me the news, I was kinda sad about it cause I really loved that place.
But as the song said "time marches on" next time I'll write about my experiences at the wild and unpredictable spot called U.S. studios AKA- the musicbox now that was a trip!

You had good reason to like the Playground. It was a hot club especially for a teenager. The dollar parties use to pack the place.
