bet you where thinking Michael Caine or Africa Bambaata.....

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE NOTORIUS BIRMINGHAM CITY FIRM
THE ZULU WARRIORS .

Here is a list of thuggery , violence , riots and attacks carried out by the notorius Birmingham City firm the Zulu Warriors ,
Also involved in some of these events were the youth branches of the Birmingham firm the Zulu Juniors,Junior Bizz Boys and more recently the Zulu Youths .
Although the name Zulu Warriors was not established untill the 1980's i have included events that took place long before the time of the Zulu's , including violence and attacks that were carried out in the late 60's and early 70's by different mobs of skinheads with names like the "Bulls Head Mob" and the "Northfield Mob" were the two main firms back then .
Back then it was a different kind of violence , hundreds of skinheads would rampage through city streets most not much older than 20 old bill were powerless most of the time and if you were nicked it was £10 fine and back on the terraces the next saturday ,
Music was northern soul or jamacian ska and dress was skin head and towards the early 70's suede head ,your gear was not a £450 stone island/C.P or Prada jacket but Dr Martin boots with steel toe caps , turned up livi 501's and a Harrington jacket or for the colder weather a sheepskin .
Moving forward in time now and the mid 1980's the Zulu's were numbering around 400-500 most big games (sometimes more) ,
Football violence had now become more fashionable with mass-media and police interest , names and status for the "Firms" and Casual clothing had hit the scene .
Those were the days of the Crown pub in Station Street and Boogies Bar in John Bright Street where hundreds of Zulu's would gather . Also hundreds of Zulu's would gather on Garrison Lane after most home games to do battle with the away fans and the old bill who were always in the way and alot of the time came off worse .
1987 saw one of the most successfull police operations of it's kind "Operation Red Card" where west midlands police swooped on the homes of 50 known Zulu Warriors in dawn raids .
But most Birmingham City Hooligans are still out there and although those days of the 70's and 80's will never return to football the violence will always be with us , and most will agree that since the turn of the century incidents at matches have greatly increased , will football hooliganism return i think so , each week i see more and more young faces down the Blues following in the footsteps of their fathers, uncles, older brothers and mates . it's not just down the Blues that this is happening we now have youth firms springing up all over the place even the villa are producing more and more young lads .
Although most think the old bill have it sewn up now, they are saddly mistaken in the last few years i have witnessed the police lose the plot countless times and the fear on their faces is unreal .
Respect to all Zulu's old and new ,and Fair play to everyone throughout the country that still turn out week in week out and have to put up with the shit that the coppers give us and have to pay a fortune for the ever rising ticket prices and train fairs .
But it's always worth it .
I think that the Zulu Warriors have one of the best reputations in football violence and still have a firm that is worthy of a top 5 status in the football violence league table .
Anyone who says that the Zulu's are over and past it are greatly mistaken , as in the last few years we have turned up in hundreds at Cardiff , Millwall and Spurs . We have got the better of Spurs when they came here and equaled Man utd in one of the best and longest toe to toe fights down the Blues for years .
Each one of the 4 above mentioned i think most would agree are the top firms in football today , so i think it speaks for its self that the Zulu's are still a top force to be reckoned with .

Bit like Wolves and West Brom...although I'm sure City and Villa is a more intense rivalry, with bigger numbers involved.

I went to a game at Molyneux once...pretty subdued expect when "Liquidator" came on over the P.A.

Why do people make films about it ?

Have you seen "The Firm" with Gary Oldman ?

Why are Italian mob films so popular ? , in reality - not very nice people.

yeah, it was a reality but hope that we don't see it again, tho the blues guy obviously wants a resurgence - only wondered if you were the same as over the months i've been on here i've worked out you're a brummie so thought you might be a blues fan

course of seen the firm and id and all that, and i'll see the next one about footie violence.

i did find the piece interesting, don't get me wrong - just wasn't sure what the motivation was

Same as the motivation to talk about ____ ? see all the spurious posts on page 1 alone, titties, white girls, porn etc

I used to drink in some of those places, remember when Boogies Brasserie was closed down when a Police man was stabbed to death.

I remember the looting of sports shops, the 80's was all mobile phones and flash cars for some, loads money era , the winebar era.
But the reality for alot of inner city people was totally different to the yuppy illusion.

Thatchers Britain , really meant "Fuck you" for most. The effects of this where wide ranging, and are still having effects on society now.

But all the violence under thatcher wasn't just manifesting in football grounds , it was everywhere , Police also killed at a Blues (in the reggae sense [Wink] ) party, riots, coal miners , everyone was at it. Even the Police where brutal , for some, going to the football was the only way to give The Police back some of what they had dished out on previous occasions.

So what was the motivation behind "the Firm" do you think ?

Good question Jesse. Mainly Black, the top boy (leader) black.

Alot of racism existed in football in the 70's, jimmymack-2000 will remember Cyril Regis, as Cyril used to play for West Bromwich Albion, who jimmymack mentioned earlier, Cyril used to get racial abuse.

The 1970's skin heads menioned in article, some where cool but some lost the connection with 60's skin heads, perhaps ? who where maybe more about music, ska. Therefore Jamaicans and skin heads got on, through having music as the catalyst maybe. Same with some of the 70's skin heads into music, but some = plain neo nazi racists, using the Dr Marten boots, bomber jackets, Harringtons, sheepskins, Crombies.. as a guise for some nasty tribalism, saying that, fighting was kinda normal, skins fought punks who fought bikers who fought mods who fought rude boys who fought teddy boys, they all picked on new romantics.

Tribalism in UK was massive but people still managed to get on in some way and the uniforms didn't matter to much that put personality and kindness higher on their agenda. Most wanted to belong to something in these dodgy times.

Also handy noting that UK had the highest ever number of un-employed at this time. UB40 released 1 in 10, being the number of un-employed. I believe the figure increased.

The Zulu's got more unified than previous thug gangs, perhaps they directly took action to make the ground a less racist place, and perhaps letting black players feel slightly more easy about their surroundings. "The article mentions "Northfield Mob" , Northfield used to cosist of some quite large council estates (Projects), right up to the 90's it was one of the more white council estates in Birmingham.
