hey everyone! [cheering] i've been laying low for a while and hope that all is well with each and everyone for you...even though there's no permanent position for me yet, i'm still holding on...on another front...this month has been gangbusters in finding classics on vinyl...this past 4th of July weekend, i went to a local store and peeked through the 12-inch section...usually, the 12-inch section at the store reeks of 90s gangster rap and 90s cheezy, pop-dance but some veteran disco dj by the name of Dennis appeared to have donated his collection...i came across sunshine sound acetates of "ecuru", "stubborn kind of fella", and "my sweet summer suite", plus an unlabeled 12" acetate of ltg exchange's "corazon"...my heart was doing a triple take at all of these classics with most of them going for 98 cents....needless to say, i took the plastic out and got the following:

wilton felder -- we all have a star (1978/"let's dance together" is one of my favorite songs from this find:)
supermax -- voyage records(includes an invoice sheet from the frankford/wayne mastering labs)
the tymes -- how i am to know (the things a girl in love should know) (1977)
skylite -- smile (1979)
charles earland -- perceptions (1978/cold, cold album produced by randy muller with some help from skyy before they recorded for salsoul)
marlena shaw -- sweet beginnings (1977/arranged and produced by bert decoteaux, which is a sign of a winner)
rhani harris and flo -- six million steps (west runs south) (1978/rhani went on to work extensively with the group "dayton")
alma faye -- it's over (1979)
tom and jerry's rockets -- on the road again/space rock (1978 heavily-synth tunes mixed by tom moulton)
winners -- get on up and do it (1978)
tjm -- (1979 self-titled album produced by tom moulton including the hit "i don't need no music")
hi-tension -- hi-tension (1978)
gaye evers & nitelife -- body party (1979)
freda payne -- stares and whispers (1977)
cheryl barnes -- save and spend (1978)
luther vandross (as luther) -- may christmas bring you happiness (1976)
double exposure -- newsy neighbors (1978)
the voices of nashville -- let it be me (197???)
milton halmilton crystiallized -- disco madness (1976)
navidades con alfonso velez (1973, contains "la luz (the light)", which was the inspiration for tryazz (wepaman's) "the breeze")

moment of truth -- you got me hummin (1977)
sarr band -- magic mandrake (197?)
brenda & herb -- i wanna make you my sweetheart (1978)
willie colon -- set fire to me (1986)
mel hayes and the 237th band -- hey boogieman (he's funkin on the dance floor) -- out on Chicago's "fleur-de-lis" records from 1977, the vinyl is even lighter and flexier (for lack of a better term) than the dynaflex-era RCA vinyl
glass family -- mr. dj you know how to make me dance (1978/feat. taka boom on lead vocals)
smiler -- love to live (making love) (1977)
the united voices of inspiration -- i'm going away (1981)
rev. milton brunson & the thompson community singers -- it's gonna rain (1982)
alfie davison -- who is gonna love me (1977)
jocelyn brown -- love's gonna get you (1985/another wbls classic)
fantastic four -- i got to have your love (1977)
francie simone -- let your body run (1979)
disco ranger feat. tangerine -- disco ranger (1976)
new york rubber rock band feat. collenn heather -- hello stranger (1976)
sharon ridley -- full moon (1978)
lorraine johnson -- feed the flame (1978) -- this pressing is a bit odd...the front side has the standard-fare Prelude label with the flashing floor but the flp is a blank white label with no music on it
gary criss -- rio de janeiro (1978)
keith b arrow -- turn me up (1978)
brother johnson (george johnson) -- back against the wall (1985 -- it's ehhhh..ok at best.)
lamont dozier -- going back to my roots (1977)
jose calvario -- the best disco in sound (1977) -- fabulous lush, orchestral disco
eddie drennon -- it don't mean a thing (1978)
linda clifford -- linda (1977) -- didn't she cut an album with curtis mayfield (rip) on curtom a bit earlier?
winners -- get ready for the future (1978)
john davis and the monster orchestra -- ain't that enough for you (1978)
stratavarious album (1977)
brainstorm -- funky entertainment (1979)
les mccann live at the roxy (change, change, change) (1977)
eddie harris -- bad luck is all i have (1975)
feelabeelia -- feel it (1984)
sideah garrett -- curves (1985) out on Quincy Jones's "Qwest" label, it features a performance by Deco, which had an unreleased album back in 1983 for Qwest with the electrofunk tune "Fresh Idea"...i really like this one:)
crown heights affair -- dreaming a dream (goes dancin) (1977)
mark sadane -- baby won't cha (1982) WHOOOOOOOOOOOOH! one of my favorites, produced by the superduo James Mtume and Reggie Lucas...."baby won't cha stay with me...." [Smile]
winners -- get on up and do it (1978)
jay black -- one night affair (1976)
gmt sound -- maleguena (1978)
supermax album (1978promo with a business card from voyage records attached to it along with an info sheet from frankford/wayne mastering labs)
the tymes -- how am i to know (the things a girl in love should know) (1977/this one's on fire for sure:)
richard t. bear -- sunshine hotel (just walk on in) (1978 with a rockish influence on it)
silvetti -- spring rain (1976)
tapps -- don't pretend to know (198?)
sterling sound acetate of loleatta holloway's "i may not be there when you want me but i'm right on time"
desmond child and rouge -- our love is insane (1978)
barbara pennington -- 24 hours a day (1977/one of ian levine's most famous productions)
cameo -- find my way (1978)
the spores (1983) new wavish album with "secret romancin" a workable tune.
jahmilla -- pillow talk (1985) very nice uptempo rendition of the Sylvia Robinson classic out on street-level records

then this past monday, i went to a thrifty in a nearby town that i haven't been in many months....peered at the 45 section first and i notice that a lot of the good ones were once owned by a man named Clint Dingo Davis since his name and addy were stamped on his records...whoever he is, he had mad good taste in 1970s r&b and disco:) here is a list of what i picked up

45s (65 cents each):

kool and the gang -- superband (1976)
stars on 45 get ready iii -- stars on 45 (1982)
cornelius brothers and sister rose -- i'm so glad (to be loved by you) (1972)

parliament -- bop gun (endangered species) (1976)
leon haywood -- party (1978/finally found a clean copy to replaced my beat-up version)
young sisters --- let's do the latin hustle (1975/remake of the eddie drennon classic on the phillips label)
mastermind -- hustle bus stop (1977)
kool and the gang -- caribbean festival (1975)
controllers -- is that long enough for you (1977)
enchantment -- it's you that i need (1977)

joe simon -- get down get down "82" (updated treatment of the late crooner's 1975 hit)
yambu -- sunny (1975)
kurtis blow -- starlife (1981)
kc and the sunshine band -- don't say no (1981)...ehhhh! it's so-so, i bought it thinking it may be a bit different from their earlier material..
lulu -- you win, i lose (1981)
jeffrey osborne -- new love (1982)
johnny kemp -- just another lover (1986) another Kashif-partly penned production (Jeff Smith also penned alongside with Cecil Holmes at the executive production helm...brought back memories:)
manhattans -- up on the street (where i live) (1977)
chocolate milk -- grand theft (1977)
kool and the gang -- slick superchick (1977)
somebody's gotta win, somebody's gotta lose -- controllers (1977)
you seen one, you seen em all -- bettye lavette (1982) rather disappointing outing on motown, very pop-rockish sounding.

albums (95 cents each) (12-inch singles marked by an asterisk)

new birth -- platinum city (1979)
sun -- sun over the universe (1980)

edwin starr -- i just want to do my thing (1977)*
adc band -- renaissance (1980)
mass production -- massterpiece (1980)
southside johnny and the dukes -- trash it up (1983) -- this is a sizzler of an album...produced by Nile Rodgers.."get the body on the job" is a slab of moody dancefloor music....."my baby's touch" is another stellar song in there...don't sleep on this one should you see it on the cheap.
the new birth -- brith day (1972) contains their remake of "i can understand it"
opus 7 -- thoughts (1979) OH SH**! based out of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, this 7-man outfit recorded for MCA's Source label and this is album is nothing but pure heat! just listen to "Bussle", nothing but mid-tempo discofunk madness..."hey big brother" is quite touching lyric-wise.
elvin bishop -- struttin my stuff (1975)
chuck cissel -- just for you (1979)
whispers -- open up your love (1977)

bring on the used vinyl finds ladies and gentlemen. [Big Grin] [cheering]

I don't think I get that much stuff in a year!

Damn Kelvy, That's a nice haul! [Eek!]
I only know some of that stuff, Milton Hamilton "My Love Supreme" is a cut, and thanks to you I now realize that he's behind that yambu, which I see you picked up also, damn! That Willie Colon is a favorite of mine, there is a record on Quark from the early 90's that is a remake of Mainline(Black Ivory), it's got an accapella and I love to drop that shit over that willie colon.
..I remeber someone from the DHP mentioning the Sarr Band before, but I have yet to run across one of those...how do you like that one? I'm not sure if it is the same song that was mentioned before -

Shit!! you found a Lamont Dozier Going Back To My Roots! - I didn't even see that the first time I checked the list, I was just looking back over it to comment....and damn....if you wanna trade that for any reason, like if you have another one..hit me up. [coolshades]
How do you like that Jonny Chingas record? I don't think that that was one of the ones that I cared for too much... He has a couple other real cool records though(IMO), Night Stalker on that same Billionaire label(that phone home is on) sounds like an early house record and is on red marble vinyl, also on Billionaire and also on red marble vinyl is Hairy Situation which aside from some strange lyrics about peoples hair, is a really good disco record... and Gandhi on Columbia which is very percussive and mixes well with house, the day I discoverd this I went to play it for a friend of mine at a record shop and one of the idjut boys happened to be there and was really feeling this..it kind of fits in with their style kinda similar to the Wicked crew from San Francisco (don't know if you've heard of these guys? or if you're into their stuff?)...anyway these are the only Jonny Chigas records that I found that I liked...
Hey, If you would... do a list of maybe the top ten that you were really excited to get from this haul... you know I've picked up some stuff too [Wink] I'll post a list asap.
Peace,
klas

dude, I forgot to mention the winners "get ready for the future" that's a great one too. did you find it on Ariola, a friend of mine just found an ariola test press of that one.... the copy I have is on Roadshow from Canada, I think this might be the original cause the Ariola relase has a little roadshow logo on it....
that plus those Acetates... man you're on a roll... keep it goin [thumbsup]
That's the one upside about being out of work temporarily... you got more time to dig for records...

Some nice finds Kelvy, glad to hear that you are keeping busy if not on the DHP board! I picked up that Mass Production LP a few days ago, along with Jimmy Ross "first true love affair" (LL mix), Nona Hendrix's self-titled LP (had a prelim listen last night and liked what i heard), finally got a hold of Kashif's debut LP (about time!), Imagination's "Night Dubbing" to work the mix with some of the cuts off "Body Talk"...
Currently i'm waiting on elektrik funk's "i sing the funk electric" (12") which I heard on a Hippie Torales mix and Evelyn King's "I'm in Love" (LP) as well as some Thelma Houston, Gwen Guthrie, and Paul Hardcastle.
I think I have a Linda Clifford LP on Curtom but I will have to check when I get home. Peace to you and yours,
Ruse

Cli-n-tel - 2030
Specials - Ghost Town extended version
Motown Superstars Sing Motown Superstars (Jr. Walkers version of Love Hangover is great)

Hey Grant, I would have thought that the NW record fair would have been a little better for you. I know a couple of the vendors that went up there and they usually come through with some cool shit.
Hey on that Tribeca label. look for one called something like "in the village" or maybe the artist is "village". [Wink]

Yep it's "In the Village". Haha I used to beat em up with that one [Smile] Now I just can't go without the Space Bass vocals though. Hmmm anyone ever heard of an acapella for this one?

Do you have Plain Characters - Man in the Railings (Rio 1980)? This is straight up Klas stylee, I thought of you the instant I dropped the needle on it. Freekay.

Re the show: yeah disappointing. Oh well, I only spent $18 and I got a few other things I didn't list. Are we talking about the same one (Northwest Record and CD Show July 13)? I don't know what I was expecting, it's all a bunch of classic rock fogies up here, and the vendors def cater to them. You shoulda seen the Beatles fans pouring through their 2 inch thick printouts looking for that one Portuguese pressing with the apple printed smaller and slightly to the left. Hey, it's worth twice as much!

Kelvy thanks for the info on these 2. I have 'Let's Dance Together' on a 12, its a mellow dance number and nice with it. just picked up 'Inherit the Wind' and I'm thinking those 2 are his finer solo moments I've heard.

Rhani Harris, what I love about 'Six Million Steps' is the way dancers might perc up at the introductory break (sampled for a club house cut in the last couple of years) and then look puzzled buit stay dancing for the rest
[rofl]

no, also I like the fact that the record was used to sponsor Andy West's 2500 mile run from Caribou, Maine to Marathon, Florida - for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Hey John, if Alex is around call him up and tell him to send me his address so I can send him this package right now when I leave work.
That Inheret the wind is a good find, I don't know "Let's Dance Together" but you can bet I'll be looking out for it now...and I know exactly what your talking about with that 6 million steps sample, cause that was me the first time I heard it...hahaha

Grant, I think we're talking about the same swap... that beatles shit is funny. You know they have whole fairs dedicated to only beatles records. I actually like it when there's alot of those kind of people cause then I know I got a better shot looking for what I'm looking for. When I see the Japanese kids coming with their old lady shopping carts, then I start sweating, looking through 2 boxes at once 'n shit.
I don't know Plain Characters, but I know Rio. that's a Canadian label right?
As for Space Bass, I don't care too much for the lyrics so that Tribeca record does the trick for me...
Peace Ya'll, damn I'm gonna hafta dig this weekend.

Klas, the Plain Characters record doesn't say if it's Canadian but I would assume so since it came in a 80s Uniwave sleeve and is (C) and (P).

Dang you need to hear this one. The closest thing I can think of is Our Darkness, but it's not as dark and distorted. I will see about putting it on my website this weekend if I have time.

That was me. It's called Double Action and is ace.
the think I like about "Double Action" is the way the girls sing in upper-class accents... aristocrat disco!

One of the regulars at the club I play at friday nights/saturday mornings donated 3 crates of late 70's/early 80's disco, funk and r&b to the "suenomartino vinyl trust fund" last night.

Way too many records to post here, but I scored lots of female vocal stuff (alicia myers, melba moore, teena marie, chaka, etc), parliament/funkadelic, james brown, bar-kays, kano, gino soccio, a bunch of prelude and salsoul lp's (including an original candido "dancin and prancin" ep [Big Grin] ) and a few sugarhill 12's just to round it off.. all of them originals, mostly US pressings..
