The music is original, diverse, and challenging
the crowd is EXTREMELY diverse - all kinds, all ages, yet obviously still welcoming for the true old school Garage/Loft heads who go every week
The bar is 4 deep from 12-4, even with VERY expensive drinks
There are PLENTY, and I do mean PLENTY, of women
Nobody is drinking water from the bathroom sink
They usually fill Cielo TO CAPACITY, with 2-300 people who CAN'T EVEN GET IN.
They even fill BOTH coatchecks.
What are he, Kevin, and Robbi doing that seems so unatainable for so many other promoters and DJs?

well, let's see. you got two of the biggest producers in the history of the game puting it down together on the regular at what sounds like a great venue. it's being pub'ed by one of the most notable promoters in nyc. doubt if anything is being done differently with the exception of the abovementioned, key factors.

All true, yet I have seen plenty of events in NYC's fail miserably under very similar conditions. And again, it really counters every stereotype that we hear over and over on DHP from promoters, and proves ireffutably that house events are completely viable, despite the stereotypes, when done correctly. Add in the power and attractiveness of the venue. Not only to deep heads but general music lovers and money spenders alike...
And you touched such an important topic... "when done correctly" which most are not.

I agree that the venue is a big draw. I think many promoters seek out the grimiest down-low spots, cuz these types of joints are more likley to be open to having mediocre bar sales, which I think many house promoters assume is unavoidable at their events. Perhaps ROOTS proves that many are aiming too low, and under-estimating the draw of great music at a top notch venue, where the people who actually spend money and keep your party afloat like to hang out. Who's sitting on the sidelines and playing Monday morning qb? There's 3 people talking in this thread.. 4 counting you. All 4 play out, and 3 out of 4 do or have done their own parties.
So...?

I'm simply trying to identify the reasons for their success, since much of what we do here on DHP (both promoters and DJs) is sit around and lament the impossibility of throwing a party much like ROOTS. Surely there are lessons to be learned.

The Venue and a professional staff. And, it doesn't help at all that Louie can play and kevin has a library or dope ass music that he made himself.
but, the spot is all that, whereas its not to large to fill. Its the hottest spot and tres chic.
And, hell yeah Jigga J I have chosen to do my parties at spaces where the bar guarantee is low.

Also don't forget one thing: you are talking about New York, and in New York you can have great house events because there are enough people to support them AND the money is there.

Two Production Companies, Two Record Labels, Multiple Staff, Two DJ's+Joint Venture=Roots.
I remember when I first started Touch Tuesday @Sapphire(nyc)in the nineties, it was a hole in the wall. It had Substance, a great sound system, and a owner who was familar with our music since he was a old Dancetaria consumer. I incorperated House Nation Production, and The Candy Store (nyc) along with this venue. Steppin Outside of the box, The outcome of the night was a great party, pulling from 150-200 people weekly before low attendance in the nightlife.
If we join together, maybe we will have more parties that people can really attend. I think we need to get past the ego first. B Blessed.

I remember Shalewa making this point almost two years ago. She said something about "everybody in NY trying to create their own little feifdoms" (paraphrasing from memory), when it is obvious that the size of the NY crowd cannot possibly support each and every one of them. Clearly there is a lot of truth in that.
Louie and Kevin having their own personal staffs behind their party is another clear advantage. Then, on top of that, you have Robbi, who will bust his ass to make the mnost of any event he promotes. [ December 30, 2004, 01:42 PM: Message edited by: D J 1 3 8 ]

If everyone is on the same page to create and set aside the ego a successful party can happen. Or at least that's what I've been told. Where's the popcorn???? Oh here it is. ![[popcorn2]](graemlins/popcorn2.gif)

Can u imagine: Wildpitch, The Choice, AfterLife, House Nation Production, Chicago, Canada, DC, Baltimore reunite. Wild Pitch and House Nation often did.
What if: 718 Sessions, The Shelter, etc. Can u imagine how many people would fly in all over the world for these events. And it's good for other business. Records Stores, Coffee Shops, McDonalds, Book Stores
In some countries, Japan in particular, Multi promoters work together to share the tab for DJ's & Performers booking fees, as well as joint venturing a particular event. Sometimes, big arenas are utilized for these venues. But I know that we are not in Japan. B Blessed.
Peace Always Wil Milton
