BRISBANE, Australia - Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray during a diving expedition. He was 44.
Irwin was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Queensland state when he was stung, Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its Web site.
He collapsed at Batt Reef, near Low Isle and the resort town of Port Douglas, Queensland state police said in a statement. Port Douglas is about 1,260 miles north of Brisbane, the state capital.
A rescue helicopter rushed to the scene but Irwin had died, the statement said.

I can't believe he is dead. I saw him display crocodiles and seem to have some pretty close calls but to realize that he finally took too big a risk...I guess that goes with the job. I loved his spirit of adventure even though it scared me.

Interesting how the Wikipedia entry for stingrays has more information on his death than the national news media.

I'm sorry but it's stupid (the photo) For me to respect the animals is to leave them alone. the method was questionable. Anyway, R.I.P [ September 04, 2006, 08:46 AM: Message edited by: Christophe ]

Terrible... what a sad day for crocodiles. Now, instead of people calling Steve Irwin to safely extract a croc from a human population zone, they'll just start killing them again (like people did previously).

It seems like he has left a legacy to carry on his incredible love for animals, one that he himself rec'ed from his own father...beautiful.
Who inspires the Crocodile Hunter?
"My dad," Steve says. "He's my hero, my legend. I worship his footsteps. All I ever wanted to do was to be him. He taught me the ways of the wilderness and how to work with animals. Pretty soon, he saw that I had an instinct with wildlife. When I go one-on-one with animals, they seem to sense that I do actually love them. My dad actually nurtured that instinct and that love that I have for animals. He got me to be the bloke I am today!"
"Crocodiles are on the top of my list. Apex predators: That's why I was put on this planet, to educate people about crocodiles, alligators, sharks and snakes. But I love me crocs, mate. If I could kiss 'em on the lips, I would!"
Steve and Terri's 4-year-old daughter, Bindi Sue, is a chip off the old bloke. Click the link to see video of Croc Hunter Jr...

That photo looks pretty crazy to me too. But now that little girl, who was in his arms, is more than likely gonna following her dad's foot steps in one way or another.

I had no idea the incredible positive impact Steve Irwin had on the environment. It's a shame sometimes someone has to die before you really know them.
