View Full Version : Toni Smith is my new Hero
She is the basketball player at Manhattanville. Before every game when the national anthem plays she turns 90 degrees away from it. She has gotten into a lot of trouble for it but stands by her conviction. I'm very proud of her

Peace.
They had a little piece on her on ESPN a few days ago. Then there was a panel discussion that included John Carlos.

I do appreciate Smith standing up for what she believes in, and the antiwar stance she's is taking.
As for myself, I, at one point (my college days) sat down at ballgames during the pledge of allegiance. Now, however, I do stand for this reason only: For the Brothers and Sisters who did die for what the flag is supposed to represent (Yes, I know, the key phrase: "supposed to"). So when I'm at a ballgame, I do think of the millions of Black men and women who sacrificed so that my life would be better.
Having said that, still give mad props to Smith for standing up for her beliefs. Peace.

i wrote her a letter of support.
basically told her that each time she turns away from the flag to remember that she does not stand alone, but facing those of us who recognize she is right-- whether it be for opposing the war in iraq or b/c of her declared exhaustian with gov't endoresed inequities. and i reminded her that the strength of this country is in it's people...so not to feel alone.
i stand with her.
