Lonny Baxter Pleads Guilty To Gun Charges
Basketball Player Sent Firearms Through Fed Ex
GREENBELT, Md. -- Former University of Maryland basketball star Lonny Baxter has pleaded guilty in federal court to a gun charge.
Baxter could be sentenced to seven months in prison under a plea agreement for sending four firearms through Federal Express without telling the carrier the package contained weapons. Such a mailing is a crime under federal law.
The 28-year-old former NBA player appeared in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt. He spoke only to answer yes or no questions about his plea.
The case stems from Baxter's prosecution last year in Washington for firing a handgun in the air near the White House. Baxter served two months in prison for that offense.
While investigating that case, authorities discovered that he had shipped the handgun from that incident along with three other firearms.
Baxter's sentencing is set for Aug. 31. He faces a maximum of five years in jail, three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.
He currently plays professional basketball in Italy.
