View Full Version : Record collections...a curse...
Well, I'm digging in, and this is turning out to be a nightmare.
I figured, I would arrange the crates, then place the records back into their crates. This sh*t is madness. I have been HOARDING (yes hoarding) music for a while now. This is actually the first opportunity that I am taking to evaluate the entire bulk of it as one mass.
I am overwhelmed. Now I understand why some people purge thier collections. I have always taken the position that whatever comes in stays. But I looking at this whole thing and I'm saying, OH MY GOD!! I think I need to start tossing some stuff.
Peace

A couple of gems.
Love and Kisses "I Found Love/Accidental Lover"
Oh btw, that's the original French import. ;)
Another one is "John Davis and the Monster Orchestra."
TOT, your a freaking slave driver! I'm doing this for you, and your DHP party in July. I intend to pack some heat the next go round.
One thing, Shannon, as long as you come with a check book, its all good.
Peace

TAC you've gotta toss the crates, not the records, well some if you feel like it. a 4x8 shelf can hold up to 2500 records. that's roughly 4 square feet of floor space. not much if you ask me. i don't know what kind of room you have in your basement, but trust me, put up a few of those & your dilemma will be solved. it also looks impressive. :D you can also create another level by placing 3 or four crates at the top of each shelf. that's another 300-350 records. you need 5/8" ply. it's the cheapest & you can coat it with a wood varnsih paint. you can even cover the shelves with some kind of decorative material or even install folding doors. it's not much of an investment considering the amount of money spent on the vinyl.

Believe me, I know I have to toss the crates. Actually, the albums are not in crates right now. They were boxed up for our move. They are actually in the basement, but must be moved out of there for the construction that is coming up.
I need to open the boxes for DHP VI, anyway. The need to move the music out of the basesment, and the upcoming party has giving me an excuse to get off my duff and get it done.
The crates are all upstairs on the third floor. This was the easy part. Now, I need to recrate the the albums. I figure it will be easier to get them back down into the basement. At that time, I'll ditch the crates and get a shelf system going.

TAC -
I feel your pain!! I have so many records, my fiancee is ready to divorce me without even being married over all the space my collection is taking up. That's why I use houseaddict, I am truly an addict. I can't go a couple of days without getting at least a couple pieces. Heym there are worse things to be addicted to. I moved about six months ago and alphabetized my entire house collection. My hip-hop, classics, reggae, acid/nu jazz, reggae, and rock is boxed behind the couch outta sight. Even when I think I have it alphabetized correctly, there are times I can't find certain records and it frustrates the hell outta me. Like Timmy said, it is truly ongoing. Good luck and no, I don't want any of your collection, I have enough of my own. Thanks!

But its all good, I ain't hating. I'm just laughing because I'm wondering whether you really realize just how much music we're talking here. Break is almost up... I gotta go back to lifting.
Peace

Actually crates can work..Estefano"the record man" Riojas..has the deepest collection I have ever seen. He has milk crates stacked up and somehow attached to each other..on every wall in his house. Ceiling to floor. And it is a pretty big place.

The crates are simply ugly...
Other findings...
Farley House Music '88. Includes "I need a Friend." Chicago knows, but does NY?

More heat..."International Smoke" If you don't know then this one is the album that included Koro Koro on the Warrier Dance label.
More collectors pieces, "Blaze - 25 years later." Mind you, I haven't laid eyes on this stuff for years so ya gotta forgive me if I seem a little excited. Funny, but I always thought I had a pair of these albums. I wonder...

TAC, just sell some of those "doubles." It might pay for some of that construction you got goin' on :D
Me, I have simply grown out of space in the record room in my basement. And I refuse to put records in storage - like having everything within reach when the thought of a track hits me. However, I am thinking about clearing out a few doubles to free up some space.

But I am done. Did it on my own so I still don't owe anyone sh*t!!!!
Now to set up the equipment, and start making noise in the "HOUSE!"
