another promoter used your event theme (in the same city, no less)? your event may be a big, long running event or an obscure venture, but it's your theme and you've used it for years.

would you confront the "would be" offending promoters? or, would you let it go i.e., write it off? is everything fair game as long as there's no copyright protection?

we have touched on this before with the use of "the Loft" (mancuso) on records but i'm curious as it relates to event promotions.

serious responses are appreciated.

Depends on how "ownable" the theme really is, which is, of course, very subjective.

I had a party for over 5 years called "Soul Sunday Lounge" - not earth-shattering in its originality, but I hadn't heard of it before. Since then, I've seen no less than 5 parties with the same name, and some of these promoters used to come to my shit, so I know they know. IMO, you just can't sweat stuff like that. You'll go crazy.

its shitty.

Call me an asshole, but I'd point that shit out in a not-so-subtle way...

"your joint is named 'so-and-so'? That sounds just like mine..."

they'll either change it, or realize that no matter how successful their event or theme is, it was borrowed from somebody MORE CREATIVE (which always crushes one's ego...)

if they do not show you respect, pull out a flamethrower and recite gregory hines' lines in "deal of the century" as you burn them all.

"want a little touch up! let's give you a little touch up!"

i think that should solve any problems.

I understand brother. It's hard not to sweat something you have built up on your own.

This happened to me. I had a DJ unit called Brass Knuckles Crew. We advertised our night as a "rare groove" night.

About two years after we started some clowns were passing out flyers in front of our venue calling themselves Kracked Knuckles Crew advertising a party called "Rare Groove" !!!

They claimed they didn't know. All kinds of confusion ensued including a newspaper running our picture for one of their events.

My boy eventually stepped to one of them....They changed their operations name.
