You do your best work behind the booth?
A. when u have alot of toys to play with (isolator,eq,fx box, filters, ect ect)
b. when you have no toys, just a mixer & two 1200 or cd players?
When I can actually HEAR what I'm doing (e.g. a good monitor)
Toys aren't as important (although I prefer an EFX-500 or 1000).......JMJ

isolaters eq's and shit... fuck em... Don't need em.. Good Dj's can do more with less, and, to be honest all this equipment enabling effects and stuff really isn't necissary. To me, its how the composition of the songs is mixed, as in, musically. Too many Dj's use all these tools, and still only manage to mix end to end and their using all these toys and you wouldn't even know it, you'd just think their playing bad music.
I do my best when the booth is like, not transcendant to the crowd, but, is more a seperate room than just a bench with 2 sides. Like when it has walls that drop from the ceiling around it and so forth, and like, basically when the Boothe is a room, with an opening for interaction with the crowd is when I do my best. Because it enables things to be loud out in the club, but quieter in the boothe and clearer and just easier. Though every boothe always has a problem.. Theres always, a turntable thats busted or, a channel on a mixer thats broken. I just need good reliable Cd players, preferably with pitch bend buttons as opposed to the jog wheel, 2 good, reliable turntables that are synced up to eachother, and a good mixer where EVERYTHING works, with preferably 100% kills. Also, you know how they say 'Behind every great man theres a great women?' well, if theres a great women in the crowd I do alot better, also, I like to have someone with me for company, but, who doesn't interupt.. Someone who has their job in there 2, like, a VJ... and I put my head down and do my job, he puts his head down and does his, we both get credit for the job at hand.
Also, an ashtray and a bottle of choclate milk, some tic tacs, a bottle of water, some asprins, and a mixed bag of M&m's ...
I like to be able to take it easy when I play, and, be very informal about it, but also very professional.. Like, I'll dress nice when I have to play, I'll be polite to everyone who requests a song, I won't play under the influence of alchohol, I'll rock up early and leave late etc, but I want to have fun with it, and for me it's ALL about the people which is why if I have someone in there with me, who is helping the party along, and is kickin back with me, and we're just fucking around, is when I do my best. ... If I have like, someone just watching me, eyeballing me... I'll fuck up.
For me, its all about keeping it human, thus, Less technology is more. The more people the better.

Two 1200's, a simple mixer with two faders, crossfader, and EQ's, good sound, and the right crowd in the mood to party.

I agree, as long as I have a good monitor and the equipment is fine, I'm AG.

See, reading that here really amazes me, where I come from, every Dj is into this, the more you have the better you are theory... And it shits me up the wall. I've noticed it in other countries to, it seems, to use this technology makes you elite... But, if you actually listen to the mixing, their mixing them the same.. Their spending so much time putting effects over songs and trying to remix it live, that when it comes to actually, transitioning songs, they all do it the same... Where as I tend to think, the best way to mix, is to leave the song as it is, because thats how it was created, thats how people like to hear it (for the majority) then, use ANOTHER song to compliment the last. Even different styles to like, get from A to B, where as Djs here, theyre focussing so much on filters, and using BPM counters to get it SPOT ON (even though they don't realise that alot of Bpm counters arent like, 100%) that like, for the most part you wouldnt be able to tell the differences in playing styles amongst most Djs here.

I'm really not into adding other stuff to my mixing experience, as long as I got two turntables & maybe a third turntable or a cd player then I'm cool.
Having a really good e.q. (three band or more EQ's) on your mixer is really what counts cause it's hard to do flat mixing when it comes to house when you want a dope mix/blend between songs.
What really gives me the best feel when doing a set is when I take an acappella & blend it perfectly over an instrumental or dub, or better yet when you find two records that mesh together well and you basically can keep both of them playing & blending for over two to three minutes & it sounds like one record; those type of things make the experience even better for you & your audience without all that fancy EFXs and whatnot.

I do my best work when the crowd is really responsive, there is nothing, I mean noting like the feeling I get when I have worked the crowd into a good dance frenzy! Its like a High, being able to relate to people thru music is the most important aspect. I recently did a party where I felt like I was in the "DJ ZONE" everything I played made the crowd go OOOOOOOO,Aw Yeah! thats the shyt when you are in a good zone, One with the crowd, the music, and the mix. Clean mixes are important, it shows the skills that you ARE a mix artist. I enjoy myself the most when the crowd are asking me for my card, or my phone # to contact me for bookings. A good Showing during a set results in more bookings, and exposure, it makes people ask for you by name and helps to get a following behind you. Machines and special effects are not needed to camaflouge the art of the mix,and distort the music. I enjoy a good echo,or Phlanger,or phazer, every now and then, luckliy I was taught how to work an EQ, or a crossover to accentuate the natural highs, lows and nuances of the song its self.

NOt to be cheeky, but none of that really matters as far as how good my play is. A crowded room is what makes me shine everytime.
Don't get me wrong, I love having the extras. But truthfully it is a crowd that makes me great.
A good clean system and monitor...and the absence of another DJ hovering nearby looking at his/her watch.

I was just listening to a mix i got where the djs used all effects and shit, it's nothing special.. Songs are made they are for a reason, i think it's wrong to tamper with that too much.

I miss the days when we created edits on the fly without the help of toys.

Can anyone rock with say 10 to 20 people max in a place that holds 100+ & still keep them with the same energy as if it was 100 to 200+
The lower the # of people the harder it is to keep them into what you are doing sometime. But i think when u learn how to make small #crowds rock it makes you a better dj in the long run.

Decent equipment that works, and monitors are important, Toys are ALWAYS fun to play with,,,,but really
WHEN EVERYONE LEAVES ME ALONE!!!!!!!!
What can I say
I like when the booth is empty, and no one talks to me...
I have to be feeling "it" to do my best work.....
This doesn't happen as soon as I start playing, it takes some time. I have to get into it, then I start feeling it, then I start creating,, vibe-ing with the people on the dancefloor, then the energy bounces back and fourth and it makes ME want to scream and then I am doing my best work.....

Gimme a decent board,monitor,and I'm cool.
I have played on some shitty set-ups and some quality ones.
I can give a better performance on decent working equipment, over fighting with some half ass equipment.
I don't need all of the bells and whistles to throw down.Just denet workign equipment and monitors,as it has been stated here before.
Dipp, playing in the booth at Elevation was one of the best booths I have ever played in.Very neat, roomy, good monitors and well organized.

Yeah, that's my baby right there. Never even dared to use it out so it stays in the studio. Too valuable to me..no SP no Hiphop-bangers! :)
About drinkin' when playing yeah I used to do that but not much..2-3 beers before I started my set, after that about 1 tops if I had time for it. Never could f*ck with drugs when I played, even a blunt would mess up my s*it.
A sure way to son me would be to put me in a club with only CD-tables. I need my 1200's :)

Yeah, doing edits live has become a lost art because everybodies has so many editing tools to choose from. I still appreciate when a dj cat play doubles of a record and do some live editing and transposing. It doesn't have to be just hip-hop cats that do that.

I'd have to piggy-back off what most have said, just a clean system with a decent board, I'm str8, sometimes I can get buy without having the best monitor in the world depending on where I'm playing in relation to the system..........
I don't worry about a lot of "toys" hell I don't have most of that shit at the crib anyways, so I don't use'em that often........

Just the basics and I'm cool. Sometimes people don't know when to leave all the gadgets alone. I guess they feel if its on the mixer or in the booth. I gotta use it..............You don't. - JMO
