shadowed a DJ at a wedding tonight. he's supposed to be the best wedding dj in the city. he's got his formula that works very well for the , excuse the term "white wedding" that he always gets called upon to play for. it's very easy.

start with the 40s and 50s. then we get into the 60s and 70s to start off the real dancing (not the cocktail eating) then when they are going with the seventies (all platinum series songs, mind you) hit them over the head with thhe 80s. then, when it's ready to be set into really high gear, in comes the hip hop.

$3k pocketed.

1 blackman there. he was trying so hard, he was dancing as white as can be. when the hip hop came on, he was no where to be seen .

I don't, by the way, blame him for disappearing!!! Eeeeeeep! I hate being the designated dancer!

yeah, i don't blame him either. he wasn't the designated dancer, though. he was trying not to be. but when the hip hop came on, my guess is he was feeling a bit too self-conscious then.

perfect tortoise shell glasses, tie, straight out of the 80s. just something to behold.

of course, everyone is dancing to "baby got back" , slapping someone else's butt, but the repression for this guy had settled in too deep. he would have none of this butt slapping stuff.

it's funny how these weddings are all pretty much the same though. every single song played was a number 1 hit at some point that everyone knows . there is no room for 1 single song that people don't know. the crowd is singing to every one.

but it's certainly comfortable to do when you are getting paid like this, in a venue like this, seeing the people as genuinely enthused as they were (it doesn't matter who they are then) , and eating the food and drinking the drinks they supplied us with.

but I'd like to see what happens when you put on JUST 1 song that they don't know. And then MAYBE JUST ! MORE! (but that's it. 3 songs, and you risk not getting referrals for your next 3k gig. )

....that's why you were shadowing a DJ and not getting booked to be the DJ.

"Lemme see if I can slip one mediocre unknown song in here just to push their boundaries a little bit.... or maybe one more.... hmmmm... they'll come around"

Dog, you're getting paid $3k to play a wedding for non-music heads, whoever you shadowed did EXACTLY what they shoulda done. That, my friend, was the PINNACLE of professionalism and accuracy to ensure that the people at that wedding at fun, and that he'll continue to get referrals for $3k gigs.

I mean, for real.... he's got that shit down to a science, could do it in his sleep, AND most importantly, he didn't fuck up them people's wedding by trying to get all "EDUMACATE" on them.

Weddings are a REEEEEEEEAL sensitive time for folks. I mean, you're talking the cumulation of months and months of stress. The last thing you need to do is try to push anyone's boundaries any farther than Madonna if it's not that kinda crowd.

You'll mess around and have the groom's 60 yr old aunt staring you down cussing you out in Romanian, the bride's father refusing to pay you, the groom's mother telling the bartender to not give you any more drinks, the bride crying and screaming at you or anyone that comes within 5 ft of her, the husband tryin to fight you, and the grooms second cousin on his dad's side waiting for you out by the van.

I'm just sayin......

... unless you get lucky and are DJ'ing for a house head's wedding.

....but you ain't getting paid $3k for that.

Peace

Weddings & corporate events can certainly help you pay the bills...

unless you're worried about "keepin' it real"

I can't tell you how many young men in my classes will ask "why I gotta learn to talk like that, why I gotta learn to write like that...I'm about keepin' it real" - in a college setting. I usually start my answer with "those peeps u worried about "keepin' it real" for, they payin' your bills? You enrolled in college to create a better life, didn't you? THIS is about "keepin' it real...about gettin' paid...about gettin' your life together. Rethink those priorities, son."

yeah, I know. and that's why i shadowed. it's been a while since i did weddings . he certainly does have it down to a science. saw myself actively pushing, "pretty woman, play them some pretty woman! I'm tellin' ya, it's pretty woman time!" and big disputes on whether Vanilla Ice and Thriller is going to get air time. (of course not. VI was on the "do not play" list, but still we had a heavy lobby on VI's behalf).

i'll come around. I was more for "I got friends in low places" (6th to last song) and bon jovi's "living on a prayer" (a wedding staple. never fail. huge response, I'm told.) and journey's don't stop believing (last song) than i care to admit, but you know, this is the DHP, so it makes for a good thread.

as much as i would want to play at my own wedding, or i think i would, really, i wouldn't. people and my wife would want to see me enjoying all my friends on the dance floor, together, with my wife.

my wife wouldn't have it.

Weddings are good cash if you can stomach them. Once you get the formual down for each natioanality, you can make some serious cash. But we all know that house djs aren't about cash, they are about PLUR. :biggrinangel:

$3K (£1500) must be crazy or have a rich daddy paying for it, £1500 for a few hours of juke box.

Blimey.

I dj'd a wedding for a freind a while back, he wanted to play some tunes to relieve him of the stress and polite conversations, his wife didn't exactly look pleased, but didn't look too surprised.

I went to a Camaroonian wedding once...they went from playing makossa and sticking money in the clothing and on the sweaty skin of the bride and groom (bald groom, head covered in bills that would fall off eventually and get replaced) to playing hip hop...first song? Gold Digga. And the money was still getting tossed:rofl: One lady on the dance floor was 92 years old, and you best believe that she was doin' the damned thing!! Seriously, it was HILARIOUS because the wedding band/DJ crew was gettin' all out on the floor and tossin' $$ during the makossa part of the night too...they were gettin' down and enjoying the variation!!!

yes, Brazen i was hoping that this DJ might get some opportunities to play weddings for other cultures. either him or someone under him. nope. he has someone that knows all the spanish stuff, but that's about it.

we'll see.

i did the wedding cicuit back in 99. I had a bad management company then. i'm hoping this to be an improvement. I think so. thank goodness i never even thought to get rid of my platinum series .

I did 1 wedding.... I fucken KILLED IT... there was a band to, I was only sposed to play light music whilst people ate and shit, they booted off the band, and got us to play some house, we fucken got em dancing out of this world, the keyboardest from the band came up and congratulated me, she was a cutie... The bride and groom fucked off, and cunts were still going nuts.. Like, they ate this shit, it was unreal.. The brides dad came to pay me. He was off his nut.. he was a school principal so i shit myself cos me and school authority don't usually get along well.. He was wrapt cos the Dj was cheap as piss. $250 I charged.. And this wedding was just, out of this world.

I wouldnt do a wedding again tho... see as i see it... A birthday is a once in a lifetime event, and the responsibility of making that day go well is allready enough to make me vomit at the thought of ruining someones big day. So, a wedding is alot of peoples big day. Its a bride, its a grooms. Its a bride and grooms parents, its a bridemaids and best mans... If I fucked that up... Like, I seriously don't think I'd be able to live with the guilt of fucking up someones big day like that.
