I need a new book. Something on the fiction/fantasy end would be cool, but maybe with an African, Asian or Eastern European twist. I've pretty much overdosed on more traditional scifi/fantasy over the years. The last books I read like that were The Icarus Girl (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0385513836) by Helen Oyeyemi and The Master and Margarita (http://www.amazon.com/Master-Margarita-Mikhail-Bulgakov/dp/0679760806/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-9765999-1595845?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1185932411&sr=1-1) by Mikhail Bulgakov.

If you like The Icarus Girl, and provided you haven't done so already, read Half Of A Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Probably the best piece of African literature in the last thirty years.

I don't know why Orhan Pamuk's My Name Is Red (http://www.amazon.co.uk/My-Name-Red-Orhan-Pamuk/dp/0571212247/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/026-7417867-1186054?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1185971098&sr=8-1) springs to mind. It's a quasi-detective story, like The Name of The Rose, set in Istanbul. Something about The Master and Margarita makes me think of it.

Ok, so I started this one a few nights ago. I'm not quite feeling it yet, but I'm only on maybe page 30, so I'm going to give it some time.

I'm feeling bad about recommending it now! As I said, I can't really say what it is about the Bulgakov that reminded me of it, but it's a book both my girlfriend and I loved.

naw...don't feel bad. It's interesting...I'm reading it thinking "I can see why people like it". The characters are bit odd (and that's right up my alley). The writing is good. But for some reason, I haven't grown attached to it...yet.
I'm going to dedicate some time to it this weekend when nothing else is going on...no preparing for work, dogs are napping, and I'm a bit more focused.
And if I still don't like it, it will still look good on my bookshelf.
