:frown: i volunteered once at the Brooklyn Animal Care & Control off New Lots Ave. During the course of that day, about 2 or 3 guys came into the dog holding area looking at pit bulls. Having gotten to know the dogs a bit that day, I said to one of them "come and take a look at this one, she seems to have a really sweet disposition" but he said "nahhh this one looks real rugged right here, big head, strong shoulders, good for fightin'!"
And then he was looking at a female who had obviously just had a litter as her teats were huge and hanging nearly to the ground. he thought she would "make a good breeding bitch" too.

sigh. recycling the suffering dogs in the same system? How depressing.

Too bad..I love these dogs.
"The dogs are considered evidence and, eventually, will probably be euthanized." :frown: naturally aggressive dogs seem to be the ones to get "put to sleep" the most. What trips me out that shelters test dogs for aggression by playing with their food while their eating, if they snap they get killed. Shit if I'm hungry and you keep poking a stick in my plate , I'll snap too!

To me if you want to do things right and mean it. How about trying to get them rehabbed with professionals. Like the guy from The Dog Whisperer, just for an example. I saw an episode where he was keeping Redman's pit while he was on tour and he used his pit to help a woman get over her fear of pit bulls. So there has to be a chance they can rehabbed.

Only if those responsible are paying for it. I don't like the euthanasia solution either...it's all rather scary. And these dogs aren't ever gonna do well with other dogs at all...

Maybe someone will start a non-profit society like the many for retired racetrack greyhound adoptions. I'm sure many greyhounds who would otherwise have been euthanized have been saved via programs like this. Maybe someone already has started such an organization, but that might be one way to approach the problem. Also, pit bulls are wonderful dogs. They are intelligent, loveable, and very quick learners. It's too bad they are also very easy to train into vicious fighting dogs.
So why was the guy into dog fighting?

I hope Vick is convicted, motherfucker.
As a pitbull/dog owner myself, i can't stand seeing pitbulls being put to fight and this fucker needs to pay. These dogs have to be put to sleep, they're unadoptable.

Major problem is that localities like to have laws restricting ownership of certain kinds of dogs and insist on incredibly high insurance if you get one of them. Pitts and Rotts fall into this category out here where I live. I think they finally had to rescind the insurance thingie because they couldn't get proof of lineage from most of the owners or some such but the rule is still popular. Eddie Murphy's brother had an army of pitts here in Englewood for a while, don't know if he still does.
They are smart dogs. Self teaching kind of dogs, my favorite kind...BUT people have this association of them with their sense of POWER and the dog becomes this signifier of power, of masculinity often. It's a serious issue, really...drives me nuts actually. Many people don't THINK when they select dog breeds and buy purebreds...if it was bred to run 25 miles a day (husky/malamute), and you don't run, is this really a dog for an apartment? NO!!! Many terriers are small game hunters...mostly for rats. You got enough rats to keep a really energetic terrier busy? No? Wonder why your shoes got chewed? Grrrrrrr....:mad1:
