Shorter versions were played on daytime radio - the longer versions were for the clubs or weekend night time radio mixshows. Today, the only difference between radio play and club play is clean versions vs. dirty versions

Yea but Frankie didn't care and would play the long versions. Vaughn Harper too. Hell I remember Frankie Crocker playing the full version of "By The Time I Get To Phoenix"- Isaac Hayes.
