so i may be a resident DJ at this club in Galveston, TX. they liked my demo and i went over there to do an audition while they were tweaking out the sound system since they'll be opening in a couple of weeks.
"we want remixes. No rap, no hip-hop. Disco classics but not too many. Club music. age group will be from 21 - 40. House but dancie house. Alot of Shakira and Latin House beats. Play some rap remixes. Vocals vocals vocals. Make it new but play some old. not all old because we dont want to scare the young people away. not too fast beats because we want the older people to dance..."
im like "ok." seems like imma have to wing it as i go because at the end the crowd is gonna dictate. i dont think these guys have ever opened a club before. lol

they just want to have a good party. i kinda figured that out but they (3 owners) were even disagreeing amongst each other on a format.
all i did was listen.

The format is called MAKING MONEY.
If you can show them how to do that (regardless of what music you play), you'll have solved their problem (unless they're complete morons).
Look at it like you're playin in front of a crowd that doesn't know you - you play to THEM and do whatever it takes to get them on the floor. Once they're comfortable with you they'll TRUST you and you can branch out musically and work it YOUR way, as long as your way works.
You gotta do the same thing with these owners.......JMJ

I can't figure out what they want you to play. There's so many contradictions in that musical description that I'm confused. :conf06:

most definately.
thats why i can listen to all the technicalities of what they want but come opening night we'll see what works. luckily i dont have to play rap or hip hop so i have 3 decades of dance music to fish and see what works.
they just asked for me cuz i was recommended as a DJ by a few peeps in Galveston.
the demo i gave them had madonna, freemasons, prince, soul searcher, mr v etc. a variety yet a good flow. they loved it

Yep
Glossary
"we want remixes" = remixes of some shit they know
"No rap, no hip-hop" = no rap and no hip-hop (b/c right now, we envision a club that is hip hop free ... although that will change, and in 6mos we will have Latin Fridays and Hip Hop Saturdays)
"Disco classics but not too many" = you're from Chicago, so we need to tell you this so you don't get too excited - now we like Disco, don't get us wrong, but don't be playing that Terry J obscure-disco-joint shit up in heeeya ... more like Bee Gees and I Will Survive ok!?
"Club music" = Club music, aka music you'd here in a Club
"age group will be from 21 - 40" = all ages like a wedding, you have played a wedding right? ... able to adapt on the fly? (depending on the crowd?)
"House but dancie house" = shit that a whole bunch of people like, "you got that song World Hold On!? ... what, you never heard of it !?" (if that's the case, don't admit it)
"Alot of Shakira and Latin House beats" =
We are in TX, don't forget that ... and sex sells and Hips Don't Lie!
"Play some rap remixes" = Remixes of rap, not rap - don't get it confused
"Vocals vocals vocals" = No fucking 8min tracks you think are slammin' ... unless it's proven like Axel F, don't play that shit while we're figuring out our crowd ok?
"Make it new but play some old" = this can be achieved if you understand their 'remixes' comment
"Not all old because we dont want to scare the young people away. not too fast beats because we want the older people to dance..." = listen and follow our suggestions on the fly (when we come for a request, remember who pays you)
