I wasn't there for too long, but I did see Sting pull out a great big

Sting turned out!! He brought in his own speakers. I never heard the park sound so rich and deep. You could hear the music outside the park. :hail:
It was an amazing event full of energy. Everyone was smiling as they sweated the afternoon and evening away.

I knew Sting would bring it...I can't believe I missed this for a mediocre and disorganized Soul Alliance boat party...oh well.
That sound was INCREDIBLE. Positioning six stacks of speakers throughout the dance area had me believing that it was the Shelter without the roof! I said that Sting would bring it, and he DID. Perfect weather, lots of people, great energy.

The sound system was much better than the previous installment but honestly I wasn't feeling the set as a whole. It was too anthem heavy for my tastes. There no real wow moment for me. The crowd loved it but I left before the whole thing was over.

Yesterday had me smiling and twirling and skipping in the circle with people I helped to raise and others who I have mentored and arthritic joints notwithstanding enjoying the passing of a torch. It found me laughing and chatting with sisterfriends and brotherfriends including my favorite Irish cultural nationalist . It had me all giggly and making out in the park. It had me remembering why I proclaim Brooklyn the center of the universe. As one of my non-househead friends texted as she ought me in the murk of dusk, "this is like the party at the end of Matrix." Thanks Sting, Soul Summit and beautiful souls who added their energies to one great summer afternoon whose memory will be ever treasured.

No "Hating," the set just wasn't my cup of tea. As I stated in my first post in the thread, too many anthems in a row and at some moments when I got into a song, the next one started (example, We Had A Thing by Abstract Truth was cut off too early) or at other times the song lasted too long. I like being surprised every once in awhile or have a "Holy Shit" moment, those were lacking for me. The consensus is that it was a good set but I'm not going to change my honest opinion about the set just because the reviews were overall positive. I can't say what I would rather hear because that varies depending on a number of factors.

I must admit that I know where you are coming from. I think that he had to play some 'crossover' joints to keep the crowd entertained. Many of those people out there were not headz. I think that he kept them on their toes throughout the day. Sometimes I think that it's just hard to try to drop some joints at some of these outdoor events. At least my man stuck with house throughout the day, and we were all very satisfied.

It's really fucked up that someone can't express an opinion without being slammed. True there were lots of anthems. For the short time I was there nothing really made me go holy shit either. But the vibe is another story. That cannnot be denied. I also don't believe you can't bang new shit. That's the whole point of why I used to go to the Shelter in the first place. If the vibe is good enough (and it was) and someone breaks a new, or not too well known, bangin ass cut, that crowd ain't gonna be going nowhere. And you know this.

I never said I wanted a more obscure set, just something that wows me, which may or may not meet that criteria. There's no doubt that he read that crowd like an expert but outside of a few moments, it didn't do much for me. I'm just one person in a larger crowd. That one person isn't going to take away from the rest of the party. I left because I wasn't feeling it and I didn't want to take away from anyone else's energy. Sometimes, there's just a few people who don't feel what everyone else is feeling and in this case, I happen to be one of those people.

From what I observed, a lot of those new heads eyes were popped wide, jaws dropped and were itchin to squeeze in when someone left some space! Especially near the end, Sting had everyones hands in the air, whoopin & hollerin! Wait til next week. It's gonna be so packed up in there, the fire marshalls may have to declare an emergency!

Everyone has opinions. Some people's will mesh with yours and others won't. Some critics have tastes that are consistently relational to your own. Whether this relationship is correspondent or oppositional this criticism can help you assess the relative quality of an event or record or whatever. Some have quirks and idiosyncracies that mark their preferences which are so deeply subjective that the criticism is of little value to others as a tool for assessment.
As I bounced around the park beaming I remarked to several folks that it felt like 2002 up in there. Part of what made Sting work so well was that he played a set that relied heavily on records from a few years ago what that are standards if not yet full fledged classics he interspersed these with Brooklyn's favorite club classics straight off of the Kim Lightfoot/Ian Friday/Herb Martin (honorary Brooklynite!) crunchy Boho Hit Parade. If he had played Worlds by Needs and Look Inside Yourself by GU, one could have made a case for the conspiracy theory that he had a secret recording of a set from the first Soul Summit summer (2002!) when the legend was born and the party was an intimate affair at Cuyler Gore park where kids hopped off the swings to dance and hopped back on when the song was done...

That was the best Fort Greene of the 3, comparable with the July 21 PS1 jam. Sting's system was good but the system they use other weekends is just as good or better: not as bright, warmer with less ear fatigue and similar power with less speakers. Peeps farther back in the park probably liked String's system more because there were speakers located farther back closer to them.
To the resident DHP beotches here, stfu LOL Myron's allowed to voice what is a reasonable assessment.

A lot of truth there, Sting plays very safe and its obvious. The music, energy, weather and girls were on point no doubt...
But I would have prefer a different selection of music, like beats that make you go wtf :eek:is dat and some deep tribal would've have been nice:)

Can you clue the rest of us in on what event in your past made you so bitter?
You seem to wallow in bitterness and spite whenever possible.
By your posts here, I am guessing it was Shelter-related in some way, but I really have no idea.

I wasn't gonna touch this whole thread but I'm with DJ 138 on this & have been for long time. Free Russell, why do you constantly come on here & say shit you won't say to people's faces? Did you step to Lil Ray @ CI & tell him what you said here to his face?
Why are you dissing the system? You were standing BEHIND the speakers most of the time I saw you there. I heard that system all the way down at Lafayette!!!
You FILMED your youtube clips instead of taking part in the PARTY that so many other folks (which is apparent in YOUR CLIPS) was loosing their minds in!!
I thought I WAS AT SHELTER having to move thru that crowd just to get a spot to dance in. I was soaked after a 1/2 hr there (which was kinda embarrassing cause I was in such a hurry to get there I forgot my deodorant) so I got real FUNKY!!! You on the other hand was as dry as the Sahara, carrying a towel on your shoulder just to front.
So please get the fuck outta here wit yo shitty ass comments about subjects which your own camera refutes. I've had just about enough of this shit!!

Fort Greene (Soul Summit) was full of energy last week. This was my 2nd visit since it's been in effect. Soundwise, the system was on point and the people were really into it.Some outside events would not ever think of bringing 6 stacks to the park just to play music. My guess is Sting has to be comfortable when he plays on a system and know that the sound has to be top notch. JMO.
