man i'm feelin' old today......
soooo...last night my central a/c in the studio goes down and I get the repair guy to come in....he's like totally impressed with the place and asks me what kind of music I do....I naturally inform him.."soulful house"...here's the dialogue...
him: "oh...me and boys used to get e'd up and trip out over that shizit...."
Me: "are u sure? cuz I don't remember seeing to many cats on that stuff in any of the parties I've been to..."
Him: "yeah my favorite dj's are Paul van Dick(oops i mean van Dyck! snicker..) and Sasha and Digweed...oh and Tiesto is cool..."
Me: "uhhhh...that's not soulful house!" so I proceed to play him the new BB Ann Nesby/ Al Green joint!
Him: "oh man their still playin' this? It's like mad old school...didn't they used to play this type of stuff in the Red Zone? ..In the late 80's? They don't even play this on the radio no more!"
Me: "uhhh yeah but it's more musical and a bit more advanced now..." Like he really understood right?
Him: "uhh that's cool....I have a friend who dj's..hook me up with some tracks and I'll see if he'll play them to a few big shots for you! Maybe he can get it to Tiesto for you...."
Imagine my face at this point...like i'm takin' a long crap!!
Needless to say the topic was changed in a hurry!
WE NEED A STATION IN NYC THAT PLAYS STUFF IN ROTATION...UNMIXED! We need to take a cue from our brothers and sisters in South Africa....for real....cuz this just depressed my ass!
forgive me ...i'm venting...
laters
depressing and frustrating.

that made me feel better thanks!
I can imagine the scenario.
Repair man: Hey Tiesto, I got a record for you.
Tiesto: who are you?
Repair man: it don't matter, just take it.
Tiesto: what kind of music is this?
Repair man: this guy I know, Willis Turner, he makes some of what you play, soulful house!
Tiesto: it says Dennis Ferrer on the record.
Repair man: (losing his patience) that's what I said!!
Tiesto: look man, I don't play soulful house.
Repair man: aaaah shit, that Turner guy lied to me! But hey, if you play the record, can you gimme a shout-out? You have a mic, right?
Tiesto thinking (yes, and do you know what I'd like to do with it?).

release the new stuff with an additional tool for trance dj's: a screwdriver to pitch up the 12's! that's marketing... :D
Trance turns me into one of these:
http://www.creativecyberspace.com/greetingcards/thumbs/zombiewalking.gif
When it doesn't do that it makes me cry ... Sometimes it feels like the music sinks its hooks into my brain and just feeds off my horror at the bleeps and bips.
*No one give me any lectures on the merits of trance. I'm excercising my right to be afraid of it.* icon_rofl.gif
And on the other side of the coin...My man was DJ'ing at a bboy battle at some high school gymnasium a couple of weekends ago. Place is packed with kids all getting the f*ck down to Glenn Underground, Tom y Joyce, Atmosfear, etc. They weren't just milling around to it. These kids were really into it. It really felt good to see that.

Kev, I was talking to my boy about this phenomenon and he told me he wasn't surprised. According to him, the younger bboys/bgirls dance to anything with a dope beat whether it's house, hip hop, etc. Maybe it's time to start dj'ing high school parties again. heh heh

It disrespects the dance nature of the music as there is usually a poor "system" and a small area where you can dance.
Only thing is that you have to dodge armchairs and coffee tables!
There is so much good music out there today, not to mention music of the past which totally compliments a lounge environment
A lot of those who don't or won't have the opportunity to play in a club will play dancefloor music in a lounge because they want to be active in the dance community.
Unfortunately this seriously compromises the music we love.
I haven't played or been offerred to play too many times in a proper club setting.
I am not the least bit worried about "my chance".
The music truely is so much bigger than we all are.
I'm totally content with the music being played properly by someone else.
I've been buying music for years and I refuse to play serious dance music in an environment which doesn't allow the listener to soak up the whole experience.
It's great that the music is being exposed though!
I personally beleive house music is too available.
There is no mystery or sense of discovery for young people.
You can go into Starbucks and hear a CD pounding away on those weak ass speakers!
But heaven forbid that there would be a dance format radio show which showcases the music! http://deephousepage.com/smilies/tantrum.gif

That's no surprise, Kev. Hi by the way smile.gif
Alot of the b-boys at the Shelter are actual, competitive b-boys. Alot of Rocksteady and NYC Breakers are seen up in there.

I do remember buggin out on that when I went to the Shelter for the first time. I believe Ultra Nate's "Rejoicing" was being played. I saw the bboys and I was like, but, but it's house, and they're bboys here. I was trippin. It's just that you never saw that in San Fran (until recently, that is).

True...but I was thinking more along the lines of getting them younger folk. I wonder if there's something besides those bboy battles that we can coordinate. Just thinkin out loud i guess...and not doing a very good job at it. heh
As for the job hunt...well I got that gig in SJ. I start on Monday...it's back to slavery for me. hail.gif

While we are trying to teach the younguns let's not forget how it used to be. Back when Red Zone was the joint with Mark Kamins, Todd Terry and David Morales lots of hip hop crews were in effect and "hip house" was a significant music. I am one of those djs who was always relegated to the early morning rave slots after the "techno/trance" guys got the headline love. Techno's true pioneers are house djs like Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins, Jeff Mills, Josh Wink, Kris Bones of Genaside II, etc. The divisions in music genres in the 90's killed the momentum that house was enjoying commercially with Inner City, Robert Owens, Black Box, etc. Somehow a bunch of drug dealers came to dominate the scene with youngsters and anything non-hip hop or pop was called house. The next time you see one of these ill-informed wannabees try to appreciate their naivete and sincere lack of perspective and try to introduce them to some real music. Some of the trance djs can play soulful sets; trance started off as a release from the relentless onslaught that techno had become in the early 90's. My home Hartford,CT used to be one of the US's most vibrant markets for house but it has gone the way of the booty track and bling bling trance. Let's try to get back what is rightfully ours; the ears of America's youth!! THey just need some guidance, not our scorn. Big up to the NJ massiv!

Why do we have this music in a box?? Why do people have to enjoy it the way we decide they have to enjoy it? If someone wants to sit in a lounge and listen to the music why do we care? If someone wants to party all night in a club why do we care? How are we supposed to spread the music when we tell people they have to come into our box and enjoy it our way? Someone let me out of jail already!!!
I'm sure I'll be corrected if you think I'm wrong, but hip hop is now a CULTURE!!! Unlike our music, it is now a thought process, a look, a way of talking...communicating. When we think of country music, we can visualize the people that listen to it. We can see what they eat, what they drink, what they wear, what types of things they say, where they live and even what they may drive. The same goes for jazz and many other forms of music. This includes hip hop. As a matter of fact, hip hop has gone way beyond rap music (just ask Lauryn Hill). It has evolved from the Run D.M.C. joints to what it is today. Why? Because it was not put in a box. It was allowed to live among the people for them to enjoy they way they wanted to. Whether we agree with it or not, it is still alive and kickin'.
I LOVE House Music. I spin Gospel/House as a ministry. Some of the missions of House of Inspirations are: to educate to people that you can worship God through your dance unto Him, to keep heads encouraged in the dark days we are living in through this music, to break new music that isn't heard on mainstream so-called Dance stations, to interview artists and producers that make this music, to feature DJs that want to share their God given talents, to reveal that THIS music can minister to folks just like any other Gospel music genre, being a bridge to those who know the music but don't know Christ and those who know Christ but never heard this form of Gospel/House music. I am allowing God to be alive in the music, which by the way gives life to house music, and I am allowing it to find a home in the hearts of anyone that will listen. I could care less where they are when they are listening to it. Nor do I believe that there is a wrong way or time to play it. Just do it and spread the love of the music. If we let the music be free..maybe, just maybe, we might be able to enjoy a revival of the music we all know and love.
This isn't about me as a DJ, this is about bringing God the Glory through this music and letting heads know that if you enjoy the music and the type of lifestyle that a lot these records talk about then I did my job.
