I was very surprised when I heard "Escravos De Jo" on Ibadan for the first time. I was expecting a typical Kerri Chandler cut, boy was I wrong.

But the one double pack that really blew me away was the Abstract Jazz Lounge on Nite Grooves released in 1997.

1 Dimitri From Paris - Dim's Jazz (Latin's In The House)
2 DJ Smash - Re-connected (Abstract Jazz Lounge Mix)
3 Nick Jones Experience - Nick's Theme (Nite Grooves Club Mix)
4 Loop Trick Featuring Maria - Beat Freak (Blaze Dub Mix)
remix by Blaze
5 Shunji Takeda - Blow Up (S.T. Hell Dub)
6 The Idjut Boys - Horizontal (Jerky Rhythm Album Version)
7 Second Floor Collective - Blvd. East (Cubalibra Sax Mix)
8 Lenny Fontana Presents Eastside Movement - Inner City (Lenny's Classic Mix)
9 Brooklyn Friends - Philadelphia (Original Demo)
10 Mondo Grosso - Souffles H (Louie's Unreleased Breakdown Mix)
11 Groove Box - The More You Want (Joe's Dance Tracks Mix)
12 What's Happenin - Sunshine

The Idjut Boys - Horizontal (Jerky Rhythm Album Version)

This song really changed my perspective on the music. A few weeks later I purchased Bug Muff's "My Funny Valentine" and there was a mix very similar to "Horizontal". Slammin!!!!!!

I had Master at Work so high up on a pedestal that I was blind to many producers out there. I began to listen to Dino and Terry, Crazy Penis, Frederick Galliano, Ron Trent and Anthony Nicholson, IG Culture, and Groove Collective as a result. Then I picked up The Black Jazz Chronicles "Future Ju Ju" double pack on Nuphonic and this really changed up my way of mixing.

So what's the one song or album that really changed your view of House Music.

Was there an element that you have yet to hear that you were not familiar with, was there an immediate understanding of your personal feelings about the music?

Peace </font>
I like how you put that last bit ... "an immediate understanding of my personal feelings about the music." graemlins/grinyes.gif
To attempt to explain .. When I first heard this album, I swear from the neck down, I felt I understood "something" more about the music. (My head just struggles to find words to describe what my body knows). It was as if all the elements needed to make me "get Garage" had been packed into this one cd. It stands out 'cause it's stripped down, no frills, no fuss, no muss - It's loud and big band in parts, it's shrill and diva in others ... all the naked piano playing ... It confuses the hell out of me 'cause it comes off so raw and plain, plain, plain. I dig it 'cause the music gave me a lot of space to come to my own understanding while at the same time telling me exactly how to get it.

Er ... It's okay to tell me you have no idea what I'm talking about. icon_rofl.gif

Yes this song brought me back to the Black Jazz Chronicles album. That swing feel to it, something that's rarely heard these days in a dance format.

It's like putting yourself out there in all your simplicity and feeling completely okay about yourself 'cause you don't give a shit what anyone thinks 'cause there are no gimmicks or hidden agendas ... Yeah ... it's like that. graemlins/grinyes.gif graemlins/respekt.gif

6 23, your thoughts remind me of when I had my "immediate understanding of my personal feelings about the music".

A mix by Benji Candelario that I recorded off the radio when I was living in California showed me the light. Nothing innovative, nothing outstanding, but the way he mixed the songs in his mix really affected me. It was as if I was in church and the holy spirit got me.

Peace

To be honest, its when I've listened to non-house albums that I've realised that house music isn't very good.

Holy spirit coming through and there's nothing you can do to stop it 'cause it's going through and you're gonna like it! icon_rofl.gif

Personal Story:

When I was kid about 8, my Mum took me to this Pentecostal church. I should preface by saying we went to church A LOT + AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT + SOME MORE A LOT + AND THEN SOME MORE!! My Mum wasn't a fanatic just always looking for that connection I suppose. I didn't get it as a kid. Sometimes she'd get filled with the spirit and start dancing around in church or at home. -There was always music involved.- For an 8 year old this is traumatic. You don't want to be the kid with the crazy Mum. graemlins/rofl.gif
Despite my http://burns.thefinaldimension.org/contrib/dvv/cwmddd.gif, I was intrigued - hooked. What was she feeling so much? It was CLEAR to anyone with any functioning senses that she was tapping into something outside of her - Flowing so to speak.

I can tell her now that I get it ... ;)

I can tell her now that I get it ... ;) </font>
I had a girlfriend in highschool that went to a Penticostal Church. I went with her a couple of times and was very uncomfortable at first because of the Holy Spirit hitting many of the members at any given time. Like you stated, I just couldn't understand the whole concept.

It was until a few years later that when I began to analyze Benji's mix that I could "sort of" relate to what my ex and the church members were going through.

one of the most important lp's definitely is the
nu yorican soul album. when this came out it was bringing back the true soulful vibes into my mixing, after many years of harder, more uplifting music. it showed me the way back to my true path.... and then there came larry heards's album 'genesis' - 'missing you' , when I first heard it from the LP (standing in the vinylmania store) really struck me - so intensely deep and moody!! this was it!!

cheers, rob.
