I understand the process of licensing for a compilation mix CD, but how is it different if you want to actually remix the song?

If you're licensing a tune and throwing it down in a mix, you're gonna be altering it in some way...whether it's just the pitch you're playing it at, the EQing, what you're mixing it with, or using two copies to basically re-edit it...where is that line, and how does the process and paperwork change when you cross it?

Not sure if I'm being clear with my question...but how would you go about it if you wanted to release a couple of remixes or edits of your favorite disco tune for example...I realize there are a lot of factors and variables involved...but any advice, tips, comments, or stories of personal experience with this would help me out a lot...thanks!

your best bet is with the label that owns the master of the original track. truth be told, you have no right to release anything of theirs whether you completely reworked it or not. it's robbing the artist and the label of their property. If you go to the original label and the mix is good, they should pay you for the mix and release it (or hold onto it until the opporunity to release it comes up).
