It's 60 years since India gained independence from Britain and split to create Pakistan.
In 1947, India was ruled by the British Empire but lots of people there wanted the nation's Muslim population to have a separate country of their own.

At midnight on 14 August, that's what happened - India split and Pakistan was born, but the partition was violent.

Millions of people had to leave their homes as Muslims moved to Pakistan and Hindus and Sikhs fled the other way.

Raising the flag on 60 years of independence, the Pakistani prime minister used the occasion to position his country as a force for peace in the region.

But what about peace within?

Security was tight today, police searching vehicles and soldiers patrolling streets close to the capital's landmarks.

A roadside bomb yesterday, the latest in as many months, has left nerves on edge throughout the country.
