I'm coming to the big apple in november, and am looking for a place to sleep at a low cost.
I dunno what's the best solution : YMCA, Cockraoched hotels, car seats, under a bridge ?..
Do NYers have ideas or some infos to help me ?
Thanks in advance, we will be 2 persons.
why come to ny? it's rat infested, people harrass you, you might get mugged or raped sleeping under a bridge. they hate foreigners, especially the french & it smells real bad. and those damn cockroaches!!! naw forget about nyc, you should go to jersey.

Try a Youth Hostel.
They host between age 2 and 82. Just have to let them know that you will be bringing little ones if that is the case.
Hostels are the least expensive place to lay your weary head. They are clean, well kept, and you have the opportunity of taking advantage of walking tours etc. that many hostels provide.
Do a web search on "NY Hostel." You will find hostels located in Manhattan, Central Park and other locations.

I dunno yet for the airport, but I won't be able to visit anything, cause I'm coming for the records, for the records, you know the records records records.
And to meet people in the record record record shops, or at night when the record record shops will be record records closed.
records.

This may be usefull to you also, if you decide that records records records enough already
Sights -- Liberty Island (the Statue of Liberty itself remains closed); the Empire State Building; Grand Central Terminal; a ride on the Staten Island Ferry; Ellis Island National Monument; the Brooklyn Bridge.
Museums -- Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Modern Art (now in Queens); American Museum of Natural History; Guggenheim Museum; Brooklyn Museum of Art.
Memorable Meals -- Daniel for quintessential upscale New York dining; Indochine for French-Vietnamese food and celebrity sightings; the River Cafe for spectacular views of nighttime Manhattan; Hatsuhana for delicious sushi; Molyvos for superb Greek food; La Caridad for that distinctive New York hybrid, Cuban-Chinese.
Late Night -- A performance at Joe's Pub; a Broadway show; stand-up comedy at Caroline's; hot jazz at the Village Vanguard; dancing at the enormous Webster Hall.
Walks -- Window shopping along 5th Avenue near Central Park; walking through the park from 59th Street to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

You are welcome idancetoomuch! :D You'll want the hostel in Manhattan to be close to the records and no matter what everything is just a subway/cab ride away! Subway is cheaper of course.
Here is the website with a listing of ALL of the hostels located in the city. I'm sure you will find one near to many of the record shops you want to visit.

I'm pretty sure you can get a room for under a 100 at the Colonial House Inn. which is in manhattan and home to west end records offices and owned by Mel Cheren.
