Greetings,
Due to the increase of my record collection
I'm trying to find out what is the best way
to keep your Records in order. Do you keep it
alphabetized[sp?], new to old [of course I keep all my classics together] , by the title or any other way. All answers are welcome thanks.
Here we go again. I organize mine by BPM. I do keep disco separated from the newer stuff, but it's all according to BPM. Makes everything easy to find...JMJ

I keep them organized by
1. Albums/LPs/Compilations
2. Singles/EPs
3. White Labels/Bootlegs
Each category gets separated by genre (i.e. Vocals, Jazz-House/Instrumentals, Deep House, Disco/Classics/Soul/Funk, etc.) then by producer and/or remixer (i.e. MAW, Blaze, Kerri Chandler, etc.). The newest tracks usually stay in my bag until I get sick of them and file them away.

Curious as to what Mr Mancuso would say, although right now he seems more preoccupied with organizing his .... graemlins/grinyes.gif cookies. graemlins/lol.gif
Larry Levan had a crate of 'David' records, and a crate of 'Nicky' records. Then it turned into male vocals, female vocals, groups and instrumentals, whith more subdivisions.
After passing 20,000 life becomes...different. You do not keep your records; they (keep) tolerate you. And they sort of...appear at the most appropriate moments. Sometimes it feel like I don't play them, as much as they play themselves when they feel like making an appearance. .....Sorta keeps things interesting!!

I don't know how much records you have, but I will say this :
- org. by labels is fine but only when your collection goes over 2 000 recs, because at this point you beggin to see that you have a lot of MAW, prelude, Salsoul, Wave... And for the remaining singles for any label, you classify them by artist name or style.
-org. by artist name is what works for me. I have A-Z letters, eg. C : Candido - Carpenter - Crystal Waters - Cenny Cope Conzalez....
and in another shorter crate, I have all the # (eg. 20 Hz or 2unlimited :D ), the compilations and white labels I never had the name of.
I don't where it can lead you when you pass the 5 000 recs collection to 5 001, but I think that when you're a dj, the classification has to be thought as a Dj (org. by BPM, style, year...) and as a collector, by label or artist name.
Have fun, and please give attention to one thing : always have 15 blank sleeves, so when a friend want to borrow you a record or more, you give them to him/her in a blank sleeve and put the original sleeves in a "lend" crate. You'll know what is missing and if you noted it, who got your missing records.
1) by country
2) by label
3) by artist
That's the way I do it

Great topic, i've always wondered how people oragnise their collection, looks like its all down to personal preference, it's great putting them in some sort of order, I think maintaining it is the hard part. graemlins/cussing.gif
I actually have a database of the records I own, but that's just for the kicks of it. As for classifying them, it's by label and artist. I guess it's mostly according to how you play and how you feel, very personal indeed. For example, I'd have a MAW section and a Kerri section, but then I'd have a whole section I created revolving around B&S so you get all the SLM & Wave along with Ibadan... but the DK stuff is classified with the vocal/new house section. There are so many ways you can classify. I have a Detroit/electronic section (where I have included labels like Environ, Balihu... etc.), just behind the MM/Theo Parrish section. The SR section. The "classic house" section. The "disco & funk" section, which is bound to be divised soon enough as it's growing. Whatever makes sense to one might not make sense to another.

No order at all. And yet I can mostly remember where I last saw a copy of a particular record...it's weird.
IF you keep them in no order then you sometimes stumble across things you haven't played for a while...you give it a spin and fall in love with it again.

i used to organise my records but when you play out alot that kinda goes to "pot"
have too agree with francois if you have alot of tunes don't organise them that way when you are looking for a tune you find others that you may not have played for a long time or forgotten about this too me can be a very pleasant experience

Just bang'em in a corner (or 3 or 4) and trust to luck...
Organizing records is like your desk, only you should know where everything is and other people should keep out.

Full length Jazz and Soul go alphabetically. More than one LP by a particular artist goes chronologically - oldest first.
12"s by label then chronologically.
Alphabetized by artist. If the artist has 3 or more titles, then i alphabetize the titles, too. Sorted by genre or era.

i thought about doing it that way aswell, but couldn't think of a way to deal with records that have more than one song on them that you could play out, at different bpm's. [then again, i could buy more copies of that record, a copy for every playable song.]
so how do you deal with it?

I have 4 major catagories and I break down from there.
1. 70's
Then by label
2. 80's
Then by Labels
3. imports
Then by label
4. New (90's -now)
By Label
By Location (I.e. Chicago labels, NY labels etc.....
accaplelas, african, latin, new disco edits/comps and boots and are put in their own places..
This works 4 me.. I think you should use what method will trigger your memory the fastest when trying to find a song.

Personally, I have mine sorted by genre, then by artist/label. By 'Genres' I mean NY House, Chi house(new), Chi House(classic), Detroit by artist/label, etc...
whatever makes the most sense to you, individually....

As Jurren pointed out, you usually have multiple songs or versions on a vinyl, so it becomes difficult to say which you've categorized it by - if you like the vocal club mix, the dub and the instrumental, where does the record go?
So mine are all alphabetical, by artist first name last name (Adeva, Barry White, Everything But the Girl, Frankie Knuckles, etc.) works equally well for single-name or long names - not by genre either, because those lines are sometimes not so easily drawn. A-Z by artist. Simple as knowing the artist's name. The other advantage is what FK spoke about "finding" things next to the record that you forgot about.

jurren </font>[/QUOTE]That IS tough. I list the BPM's of ALL the playable tracks on the record cover, but file it under the BPM of the track I play the most.....JMJ

good thread (even though this topic has been discussed before)
