View Full Version : The best hot dogs in New York???

Everywhere I asked, people kept telling I had to go to Nathan's. Well, I finally tried it and was not impressed. Is this really considered the best dog in NYC? If so, the City of Angels has NYC beat. I even tried one of the dogs from the street vendors and it was just a bun with a plain ol' weenie. LA dogs win in that department. Pinks is still at the top but the LA street vendors are definitely the king of the dogs.

Yea I have never seen anything like Pink's in LA. If we have anything like that here in NYC I don't know about it. If I ever get to LA I am heading there.

You went to Coney Island? The other Nathan's ...franchised.

Ok: I'm violently allergic to hot dogs and have not knowingly eaten one since the early 70s, but loads of people rave about going to Jewish deli's for the beef hot dogs or to Gray's Papaya ...give those a whirl.
We have something called Callahans here in Jersey that people gag over all the time ...

And u gotta be picky about street vendors anyway...

After being away from NY for 15 years, Grey's was my first stop. Though I must say, it tasted different from what I remember it when I'd go there after clubbing.

Exactly. I stopped eating hot dogs years ago, but I doubt if many places can compare to Maxwell Street or Superdog in Chi-town.

If you roll up 95 a bit there is a serious hot dog spot called "Super Duper Weenie" in Connecticut (I think Stamford). These hot dogs are amazing! Great toppings/features, good fries, a solid stop on a road trip up North.

Nathan's is not the best, by any means, but rather the OLDEST.
They're the original, so we give thme their props.

If you want the best dog, there are a couple of hot dog specialty places in the east village that are actually trying to do something good. One is on Tompkins Square park and the other is on Ave A, but the names escape as I don't eat hot dogs but maybe once a year.

for piza ther is a debate who is better, but i have not even heard the word hot dog and NY used in the same sentece (unless you are talking about jeter or a-rod).

The "Chicago Style" hot dog got its start from street cart hot dog vendors during the hard times of the Great Depression. Money was scarce, but business was booming for these entrepreneurs who offered a delicious hot meal on a bun for only a nickel. The famous Chicago Style Hot Dog was born! They'd start with a Vienna Beef hot dog, nestle it in a steamed poppyseed bun and cover it with a wonderful combination of toppings: yellow mustard, bright green relish, fresh chopped onions, juicy red tomato wedges, a kosher-style pickle spear, a couple of spicy sport peppers and finally, a dash of celery salt. This unique hot dog creation with a "salad on top" and its memorable interplay of hot and cold, crisp and soft, sharp and smooth, became America's original fast food and a true Chicago institution.

This is my favorite hotdog spot in all of NYC:

http://www.papayaking.com/html/locations.htm#

The original location on 86th st & 3 ave. Better than Grays but that's because Gray's doesnt have chilli or cheese dogs & Papaya King does.

The spot Chris Burns mentioned is so good, it got a spot on PBS's best hot dog show. I tried to find it before he got this fancy spot & was still grilling on a food truck in a parking lot of off exit 24 on I 95 in Fairfield, CT.

http://www.superduperweenie.com/menufairfield800.htm

I think these are the spots that DJ 138 was referring to:

Crif Dogs on St. Marks Pl & Dawgs on Park on E. 7th St. bet. A/B

http://www.eastvillagepodcasts.com/2007/08/16/dog-fight-dawgs-on-park-vs-crif-dogs/

Havent tried either one. Had only heard mentions of them.

Lastly, when you eat at any one of the street vendors here in NYC, unless you know them personally, you are taking your life into your hands. The only street vendor I would ever recommend is no longer there but she used to be on W. 102 st & B'way (Rita). Someone I used to hang with one time ate a street dog & got so violently sick he had to be taken to hospital in an ambulance. Food Poison!!! Since then I only do either Gray's or Papaya King but will be trying the 2 East Village spot's soon. Tho I don't know about paying over $4 for a hotdog!!

Oh!! I almost forgot you can always go to Bloomingdale's & try one of their $18 Kobi beef hotdogs.

there are some places but they arn't real or ol skool like pinks. I think L.A does have NYC beat on dogs. There are these new school hot dog shacks that are sort of yuppie/foodie takes on the whole thing. Grif Dog for example on St Marks.

I think New Yorks thing is jus how many vendors we have selling them off the street and those quick fix 50 cent grays papaya dogs. Or are they up to 75 cents now?

grey's papaya is excellent -- and there's lots of new papaya places all around town, i.e., looks like they've gone expansionist a la starbucks

as far as the best GYROS, hands down, you have to go all the way up to 104th street and broadway to the JERUSALEM RESTAURANT -- b/w 103 & 104 on west side of the street -- there's nothing downtown that can remotely rival this place

As good as they are...after/during a night of drinking Gray's are Sabrett dogs. What gets me there is they actually sell Sabrett mustard, which is crazy hard to find. I rarely see it in supermarkets here in NYC. A dog id as good as it's mustard IMO.

Quiet as it's kept, I used to sell hot dogs down on Wall St and Pearl. Nathan's was a few blocks south near the water and I used to compete with them because I would have a line down the block. I was cooking and selling Hebrew National Hot Dogs. Those are some good dogs if you cook them right. And taste 100 times better than the dirty water dogs.
