This is really ill. Somehow I missed hearing about this. But, I did read that it's possible for the young man to get 22 years. Whereas, sentencing has been schedule for September 20, 2007, thats in a couple of weeks.

How can you call the the ruined lives of children 'old news'
When did it become ok to brush off real time injustice and institutionalized racism?
I hope you don't take this the wrong way - it is much more an attack against myself and my community than it is against you.
you say it's old news, but something like this never gets old. wounds that get old, eventually scab over and heal - something like this is a covered festering wound.
you can call it old because I know damn well that if something like this went on in your community - in a matter of days - you all would be mobilized - your voices would be heard - you wouldn't just roll over
Our collective apathy is sickening. In our families, communities and our nation. What we do as individuals is one thing - what we do collectively is what will make a difference in the long run.
I sometimes look at the youth on the street - hair half combed, half dressed, rugged, raw and hopeless - fighting for fun
and I wonder 'why are they like this?'
it's because they know nobody gives a fuck about them. We are all so absorbed in our own lives that no one seems to notice that the the harvest is failing. We sow seeds and leave the fields unattended
these children are going down - and we do nothing. we got cell phone, Iphone, facsimile, internet, landline etc . . . 10X as many ways to 'spread the word'
yet there is an eery silences in our community - especially when it comes to our children.
why is it like this?

I question this all the time. Youth should be better off today with all that is at their disposal. Yet it just seems they are more troubled and definitely more obese than their generations before them.

I don't want to speak for Juan, but I took his response as more of a "LATE" thing than any sort of referendum on the story itself. There have been several "Jena 6" threads on DHP in the last couple of months, and because of them, some of us have been spurred to act on behalf of the accused and their families. I know I have.
So, seeing one more thread about a topic that has been discussed several times here would seem to invite the whole "LATE" response that DHP is famous for.

Thanks for posting this. I was going to, but i thought someone else did already. This is one of the reasons why I won't go live in the south, Texas or anywhere else this type of shit can go on. Then people wonder if think racism still exists!
LATE OR NOT WE NEED TO BE REMINDED OF THE INJUSTICE THAT STILL EXISTS IN AMERICA.

From my vantage point, this hasn't been the case with the "Jena 6". From my church, to my sorority, to my friends' emails, to the listservs and email lists I'm subscribed to, to DHP, I have been hearing about this case (and been urged to take both individual and collective action) for months.

I don't know who you are or where you live but I'd be much more comforted if every other corner in my neighborhood literally had someone standing on a soapbox.
Why does it bother you that some of us think this is an issue which needs more attention? Why are you even reading this thread if ya don't want the rhetoric?
Soapbox? I know you're kidding . . .

and, as for that late stuff... its always been kinda wack to me anyway. Cause, not everyones life revolves around this board. Even though at times my life has revolved around this board. However, late or not maybe someone could be oh so kind enough to post the Jena Links.
be well

Thank you, DG. As always you have a way of eloquently stating what I wish I could express.

You know, I HATE this phrase (not directed solely at you, kayotv). It just sounds so condescending. How 'bout those of you who missed previous threads just missed them, are subject to a little good-natured message board ribbing and leave it at that?

i think i just have an issue with being condescending. Damn, I wish I could stop! Still, your later phrase is much more subtle and less-threating. thanks
btw, thanks for posting the links "magic" juan.

This is what I mean about black suffrage as our cultural foundation.
This is NOT the way it is in America. Why in the world haven't black people, en masse, shut their mouths, put away their words and simply handled this outright? Why are we just so content with shrugging our shoulders and expecting conspiracies and corruption from our government?
Its black folk who have the Jena Six in jail because we need them to be in jail in order to reinforce our cultural foundation.

Are black Americans culturally inured to expect persecution? Meaning, are we so settled in the cultural notion of overcoming, we actually take positions on the spectacles of Mike Vick, Barry Bonds and so forth and not openly discuss situations such as the Jena Six?
Do these situations work toward reinforcing our cultural notion of black Americans as oppressed people? Do we then allow these situations to persist because, in some way, for black folk, its normal?
I know its a heavy thought, but if we allow it - just for a moment - couldn't it be possible that we NEED the Jena 6s in order to maintain our collective consciousness?
