Hi everyone. First of all let me introduce my self, because this is my first post here... I'm from Brasil and for two years I've been learning from deephousepage.com. and related about the history of house music through readings and lots of music. It's not easy to be a deep house dj down here, bring a foreing culture in...paying so much money to get my records...but since I'm addicted I have no place to run to... graemlins/conf44.gif

So, let's go to the post....

I've just finished reading The Vulture, from Gil Scott-Heron. It was great to read something from the musician that I admire so much, get a closer idea on the history of the afro american community on the late 60's in NYC... and so much more!

I want to know from you out there if you have anything else like this to suggest me, because I know that you people from DHP go deeeep into these subjects...

I would appreciate comments on this book too, if you have any....

Respect!

dj ezy

ps: don't shout at me because I posted it here..
:D

Hey Deep !
I've never read Gil Scott-Heron but it seems like an excellent read !
The only books related to music i have read are Mel Cheren's my life and the paradise garage.. and
Last Night a Dj Saved My Life. Both worth a read... but you probably know that. ;)

No doubt it's an excellent reading, gives us many views from a man who was a great poet and writter....I believe a musician by accident... :D

I know about the classic Last Night A Dj Saved My Life, but I have to quit for a month buying records if I want to import it... ;) but I will work on that soon!

peace...

He just performed at The Knitting Factory here in NY a few days ago. I found out about it tonight of course.

on teh subject, I read an article a couple years ago that said he was still an addict and was AWOL in Harlem somewhere. I don't know if there's any truth to that or not.

I'm always interested in life and culture, specially when it comes to black music in the USA. (is it correct if I put it like this "black music"?)

about DHP:
A friend of mine 2 years ago gave me a copy of a tape he brought from Chicago: Boo Williams - Strictly Jaz Unit vol.2 and 12 cd's, all from DHP, like Larry Heard, Boo Williams, Lee Collins&Sadar, Lil' Louis, Abacus, Craig Alexander, Steve Silk, Larry Levan....etc...
I know it will sound like that old shit, but that changed my life...I became addicted to deephousepage, and house music became the most important thing in my life. I sold the car I had after 6 months so that I could buy turntables and the rest... graemlins/stupid.gif
Here I am (almost alone...have only Anderson Soares around) trying to make it real down here... ;)

sure, you can say "black music", you will find that if someone takes offense they will let you know. as for books on black culture in nyc in the 60s check out "Manchild in the Promised Land" by Claude Brown or Malcolm's bio or anything by James Baldwin.
i saw a movie set in rio "cidade de deus" which was set around the same time, there are many, many similarities between both cultures, imo, peace

thanx for the readings brother!

"cidade de deus" it's an unique movie for us, because no one has done before something like that, exposing the culture in such a natural way... the guy who made it had trouble with the law because he got too close to the drug dealers (he was actually friend of them) and the hipocrits tried to arrest him saying that he was envolved with the traffic... graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

Another great 60s book (not music related, but political in nature)
SOUL ON ICE by Eldridge Cleaver
and mos definitely Malcolm X's autobiography
