What scary to me is that Britain and China reported the story in their countries months ago and are laughing at us since our biggest stories have been an athlete engaging in dogfights, a senator trying to get a BJ in a Minnesota bathroom, and cokehead Lindsay Lohan, and a multi-millionaire heiress getting out of jail and then facing the prospect of losing the Hilton inheritance.

I can't believe this happened way back in December and the story is still not national news.
This has been discussed here on several threads..

A lot of us went to the site and sent letters to Gov Blanco as well. I believe Brazen posted the generic reply we all got from her office...
The Michael Baisden Show: Live from Jena, LA September 20th
The Baddest Man on radio is putting action behind his words. On September 20th Michael Baisden along with comedian George Wilborn, national celebrities, and thousands of loyal listeners will March on the Jena Courthouse to demand justice for Mychal Bell, one of the black teenagers awaiting sentencing in the Jena 6 Case. Mychal Bell could receive up to 22 years in prison for what amounted to nothing more then a fist fight between black and white high school students.
Michael will need all the support he can get to show the prosecutors, the Judge, and the entire nation that we will not stand by while they steal the lives of our children. Time for talk is over, it's time to act.
Details about Michael's visit to Jena on September 20, 2007:
5:00am Buses meet in Alexandria, LA at Parish of Rapides Coliseum to caravan to Jena
7:30am Meet in Jena, LA at LaSalle Parish Courthouse
8:00am Rally & March for Peace and Justice
9:00am Sentencing for student Mychal Bell
*Wear Black on Sept. 20th to signify unity against UN-EQUAL JUSTICE in America

To see what it'd take for me to drive down to Jena for the trial on the 20th. I've already made my car rental reservation (7 passenger mini-van) and I'm trying to make hotel reservations. I wanna be there (last time I attended a rally of any sort, my image was plastered on the news and I got fired, but we're not gonna go there . . .)
One of the tragedies in all of this is that this story is not unique. This type of stuff happens all the time and never makes the news. The only thing unique about this story is that after nearly a year, it has not drowned and floated quietly to the bottom of the sea.

It is very much national news. And take-action articles and emails have been arriving in my inbox weekly (now daily in the last several days) for quite a while.

I've seen the story on the DHP several times. I was just hurt that something so vital to the race argument gets reported once on CNN and then disappears. But I forgot I live in America where relevant news loses out to a story on how long Nicole Richie was in jail. Sorry I lumped us in the with the general public, I meant mainstream media when I said "while we were arguing ..." You guys on the DHP are a wealth of info. Thanks for that info MYOR and Discogoddess.

No...my bad hun, I live in northern VA and it is farrrrrrrrrr from here. 15 hours would be a dream...
Anyway I used to ride down there from Chi all the time when I was growing up. It's beautiful. If you've never done it before, you'll find Illinois to be the WORST leg of the trip. When you get to Cairo, you'll be doing the happy dance. Arkansas is nice and the rice fields in LA are quite nice. Stop off for lots of crawfish and boudain on your way to Jena! (sorry, I'm hungry)

We started posting about this back several months...on the old board. Problem is that this board won't let you search anything 4 or fewer characters. It's very annoying. I don't end up remembering the names the threads...
I'm glad to see folks on here getting involved!!!

I sent this story to my friend who lives in Brazil(but who grew up in Louisiana) and he sent a message to the state. He showed the story to some of his Brazilian friends and they were in shock and aghast themselves...
There is a lot of pent up racial tension here in this part of the country. When the whole Katrina thing was going on the consensus amongst many whites was "lock your doors" and prepare for the criminal onslaught of the 'refugees'. Radio talk shows went on and on about the "spike in crime" and all this other crap. Even at my job they sent out memos in Texas forewarning of the "threat" coming through the state. This is just an example of long standing racism and prejudice that has been brewing for ages...
