i used to ugly up the city of l.a., but stopped 'cuz i had no talent to rock the spots. oh yeah, PuzL---->
people still call me by that name to this day and it's been somtime. miss the adventure though. graemlins/bolt.gif
I used to write "Cube" which is my OG name. I used it mostly for piecing and also tagging, but then my name got burned and I had other crews hunting my ass down because at that age I just didn't give a fug about anything or anyone, so I used my second name "Snach" to keep on keepin' on. I was in two crews: TOS (Takin' Out Suckas) and D2D (Down 2 Destroy). Those days are long gone but I still have my photo album of all the pieces we did, as well as piece that other peeps did.
I used to write DOSE and DOZE.

We used to chill out in the riverbed by my house under the bridge where we would put up pieces. Well, some fewl thought it wouldn't mean shit if he tagged all over MY piece. I didn't like that and I crossed him as well as his crew out. I just didn't give a fug. They never did find out who I was cause I was real quiet about it and I always made sure I was with my friends too. A few of them did find out who I was when we threw down at some train tracks where writers would piece a lot, but we were 5 and they were 3 so we gave them an ass whoopin' and we got the fug outta there.

He first started writing graffiti in his neighborhood in 1974, and started painting subway trains in 1976. The following year he joined the Rock Steady Crew. The Rock Steady Crew were pioneers of a new style of dance known as breakdancing or B-Boying. The crew first started dancing at art exhibitions and galleries of Soho and the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
During this time Doze was also attending the High School of Art and Design, where some of the most talented and well respected graffiti artists came from. Artists such as Lady Pink, Daze, Ernie Valdez, Seen TC5, Mr. Wiggles, Mare 139, and numerous others. In 1982 Doze showed his artwork in a well known group show at the Fun Gallery. At this same time after appearances in major movies such as Flashdance, Style Wars, and Wildstyle, the Rock Steady Crew was launched into action and the limelight.
From B-boy to graf legend Doze has gone to tagging the hallways of South Bronx projects to designing for clothing lines like Kikwear and Ecko. In the process, he's become a proponent of the avant-garde "fusionistic" art movement.
In the past year, he's been featured on dozens of exhibitions in art galleries from both coasts.
Best known for his characters, Doze has begun to concentrate on canvases that blend wildstyle techniques with metaphysical concepts. "I think I'm at the point where I'm movin' even further, to more distant frontiers like sculpture and 3-D painting".
With pieces ranging from the low thousands to upwards of $12,000, it's obvious that Doze is aiming for the serious modern art collector.
"Probably the biggest challenge and the most fun is painting live, " reveals Doze. "There's a communion between the audience, the DJ and myself. The DJ is feeding off the music, and if the crowd is hype, he goes that extra mile. The same applies to me."
If you dig Doze Green's work check out some of the covers he has done for the Future Primative series including the cover work for the Presage cd. He has also done some work for the Deep Concentration series.

i used to write Zen (i gave the name to alex a few years later).
i then wrote all of these at the same time
ALIE (Ai), VC19, & DINKE (De).
if anyone remembers the Chicago CTA competion.. we placed 3rd one year.
we (Ue,Mf.) went under the name Beatniks.
i had the biggest piece on the wall.
it said Dinke. i also did a Hello Kitty character.
and wrote Hello Dinke next to it.
i still write on shit every now and then.
i haven't painted or gone out bombing in mad long though.
i would love to piece up a wall and or maybe do some throw up fill ins.

This book gave an insight into the standard in New York to a lot of British/European kids in the 80's, I remember a freinds dad brought it back from New York before is was on sale in the UK, blew our minds at the time.

Martha Cooper - Photojournalist
Martha Cooper is a photojournalist specializing in art and anthropology. She is among the handful of photographers who methodically documented subway graffiti during the 1970s and 1980s. Her body of work is the most extensive and significant of its kind.
Cooper's hands-on approach to documenting the culture set her appart from other photographers. The majority of photographers focused specifically on documenting the paintings, isolating them from their environment. Cooper's approach was to photograph the paintings within their full context. She spent several years photographing elevated subway lines from empty lots the rooftops of buildings in a crime ridden South Bronx. She captured New York City's state of urban decay; providing a fuller visual understanding of the artwork and the times.
Cooper gained the confidence of some of the most respected artists in the community, such as DONDI, DURO, LADY PINK and others. This confidence afforded her opportunities to document the execution of many subway paintings. Assuming great risk Cooper accompanied writers to train yards and lay-ups capturing many significant moments in aerosol art history.

The landmark book Subway Art published in 1984 which Cooper co-authored with Henry Chalfant is frequently credited as the catalyst and foundation for aerosol art movements worldwide. In 1994 she co-authored R.I.P.: Memorial Wall Art with Joseph Sciorra. Her photos, covering a wide variety of topics in addition to graffiti have appeared in countless publications throughout the world including National Geographic. Recently she has contributed to Seattle Experience Music Project' s History of Hip Hop. Her work has been displayed at the Museum of the City of New York and The Whitney.

Subway Art books was like the bible to me.
New Yorks style was my inspiration.
It took some years and everybody was writting his name on a wall in Germany.
Nowadays ithings have changed, new cans specialized for graffiti, official places and lessons in school!

I think this might have already been brought up a while ago...but do you know if Futura 2000 is the same person who was involved with the label Zoo York? If so...did he actually produce any of the music on the label? I'm pretty sure I have a record or 2 that say "Futura" or "Futura 2000". I think when this came up before someone said that there was also a Zoo York skateboarding company that he was involved with.... </font>[/QUOTE]The Soul Artists collective produced the artwork for the Walter Negro / Loose Joints 'Shoot the Pump' cover on Zoo York Records. And as mentioned in that previous thread, J. Walter Negro published Zoo York Magazine, for which Futura also artworked the cover.
Tracy 158, Futura 2000 and ALI started Soul Artists in 1972. Marc Edmonds AKA (ALI) was Futura's lifelong friend and the creator of Soul Artists.
Futura recorded & artworked for Celluloid Records.

Forgive me I haven't read the whole thread, but 'Style Wars' just got a double DVD release...
Style Wars : Style Wars
Plexifilm
There's no way that there's enough room for me to describe my love of "Style Wars" in this short space - suffice to say that it's the only film i've seen as many times as Star Wars trilogy! If you like hip hop OR films in general, you owe it to yourself to pick this up i'm telling you!!
2xDVD - 006 - £26.99
Region 0 DVD edition includes 23 extra minutes of original 1982 footage, 22 lengthy interviews with the writers (grown-up Skeme & his mom still arguing in 2002!!!) and dancers, directors commentary, 30 minute loop of 200 whole cars scrolling by and a hall of fame section with 32 artist galleries (Rammellzee's sci-fi outfits included!!) showing their best trains. This the killer app for DVD players...
