View Full Version : Quitting Smoking
Good for you. Good luck.....JMJ ;)
Please share a story, if you have one. It could be a success story, a tragedy or whatever. I'll print the thread and carry it with me for inspiration.
Excuse me now, I'm going for a smoke break while I still can. I have a feeling this'll be one of the last times.
I will always love cigarettes.

Hey, 2121! Be strong. It's hard to quit. Are you going to try the patch? Best to you in your decision. You'll save money and, hopefully, feel better too.
I quit too. Well, sort of. I just don't buy packs anymore, but when I get a few drinkity drinks in me I usually bum one off of someone. For the most part though, I've quit. You're talkin' about cigarettes, right? http://deephousepage.com/smilies/smokin.gif

No snoking unless its a joint o' kind bud!!
i quit smoking a week ago.. Actually, i only smoked joints, but at least five a day..In the end, that adds up as well...It's not the first time I try to stop, but just as my last attempt, about a year ago, I'm surprised about the total lack of craving..My body ain't asking for nicotine it seems..I think that's strange, since I've been smoking for years ..
I know the only way to make this work for me is to start cycling again..I find it impossible to exercise myself on a daily basis, and keep on smoking on the same time..Being healthy in general will help me..This also implies I will go out (even) less , since I know it would be difficult at first to resist when a joint is passed..
good luck 2121! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

i quit yesterday and it's been a hard 24 hours so far. Last night was the worst, but this morning i felt OK. It's worth sticking with...

I was smoking more than a pack a day when I quit in December. I quit from one day to another without any reason, except my health. Haven't smoked a cigarette ever since, and never felt the need to...
It's all in the head, make that final decision in your head and just get on with your life...we're almost trained to think that quitting is an immense and difficult task, that's bullshit, your body and mind are much stronger than that. Don't let them fool you...

I used to smoke 40 Regal a day until 3 years ago. I gave it up overnight. I didn't want the baggage anymore, if that makes sense. The first 3 weeks are the hard bit physically but the killer is the ridiculous nostalgia - "shit, I'll never be able to smoke a tab on Little Clarendon Street on a sunny May morning again". You also have to consciously put yourself through tests like drinking, revisiting the town you used to live in when you were a teenager etc. Although I find it quite easy not to smoke, if I did I'd be completely hooked again.
Good luck, it's not too hard if you want to stop, and you keep it in mind. And it's a great feeling of mightiness to know you've won.

i've given up three times. once for 6 months, once for a year and again for 2 years. but always gone back to it.
i used the allen carr book each time. it really explains how much easier it is to give up smoking than you think and destroys a lot of the myths (ie. harder than heroin etc. etc.). Try it out.
I'm still smoking 20 a day, but one day soon I'll quit again...hopefully for good. At the moment I like smoking too much to quit. As soon as I stop liking it (as has happened in the past) i'll quit.

you have to quit on joints...or you end up smoking 5 joints a day to get that nicotine hit.

I disagree, I still smoke joints (an average of one a day, maybe more when I go out) but I don't get my nicotine fix from there, hell IMO I don't even need a nicotine fix. It's all in the head man, all in the head.
Ow, and don't start with that bullshit like "smoking joints is equally unhealthy", the way I see it is that I went from cigarettes and a whole bunch of joints a day to just 1 spliff a day...and that suits me just fine...

David...fair enough. When I quit I had to quit spliffs too because it was making me want to smoke cigs.

I understand your view, but a joint never gives me the urge to smoke a cig, so I don't relate the two...
i only smoked joints for 9 years. I never touched one cigarette .. (except that day Anderlecht played Manchester United, and I had to do something to calm myself down..)
I easily smoked five joints a day..Yet, i don't believe that's even enough to get you addicted to nicotine..I've quit several times, but never there was any 'nicotine' craving at all..

May the forcer be with you.
You can be my shining light.
I have stopped for a few months a few years back and then I felt like I had to start again when I was looking at a friend smoking in a pub and I hated him, I thought well it shouldn't do that too you so I started again .
it's easier when you stay away from social drinking circles.
I wish you the best

Nev,
Folk in Liverpool smoke Regal too. I was there a couple of months ago and the sight of the pack tugged at the heart strings. I stood resolute, though.

It's all mental. If you can kick mentally then you will quite. I quit years ago ,although I do smoke when I'm playiing.(but that does not happen too often, lol!). Believe me, once you run up a flight of stairs without gasping for breath, you'll see it is worth it!
peace,

212...try reading "the easy way to stop smoking" by alan carr...Kind of odd but reading this book really works,i know a few people who kicked the habit thanks to it.I was a 30 B£H a day man,but after reading the book i quit and had no desire to touch another ciggy again. That was 8 months ago...It works i tell you !!

graemlins/mecry.gif Here's an inspirational story. It's the same one I'll use for myself when I quit sucking on those blasted Parliament lights.
Anyway, as far back as I can remember, my dad has been a smoker. Probably the cleanest smoker I've ever encountered 'cause I never remember our house smelling like cigarette smoke (he had this thing where not only was the ashtray to be emptied but it was also to be washed out and dried before re-use). I digress ...
When he'd send us out to buy cigarettes for him, he'd give us money for 4 cartons at a time. graemlins/scared.gif
Well ... fast forward to 1990 - the new year. My dad's been taking very good care of himself (plays squash regularly and credits his military background for his good health), he decides for the new year he's going to quit.
He quit
Cold Turkey
Hasn't touched a cigarette in 13 years! He NEVER went back once and never used the patch. Now that's inspiration. Hope this helps you.
Hmm .. all the talk of cigarettes ..
Time for a parliament break ... graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

The only reason I smoke when I'm at work is b/c its more acceptable to be outside smoking then just b/c u need a break... Basically an excuse..

Sad but True... :( yeah, i think non-smokers should be able to take periodic breaks throughout the day. we actually have to deal with these idiots un-aided by mood altering substances. it makes you wonder why we keep coming back.
anyway congrats 2121... i'm sure people will prefer your new non-smokey odor.

try using the nicotine patch. it works surprisingly well. i haven't quit completely, but i'm down from 25 to 1 or 2 a day.
