I know some of you all was dissing it, but I am going to see it tomorrow or Saturday.
it might be ok, I dunno, but it seems like Tom Cruise ONLY picks roles that glorify him as some type of god-send hero or something
I mean, the LAST samurai is some american...
graemlins/conf44.gif
He is not a horrible actor though.

question: is the Asian community pissed off over the choice of Tom Cruise as the Last Samurai or it's not that big a deal(or am I missing the point)?...

And plus TC's characters have hooked up with every other nationality now. I know that's why he REALLY took the role.
He's not, thankfully, wearing Keanu-Little-Buddha style makeup or anything. He plays an American turned culture vulture. Nothing new...but I will give it a chance smile.gif

but i'll copy and paste what's on there to give you some kind of idea on what this movie is about as i am definitely NOT an expert on the story or the book.
"Captain Nathan Algren (TOM CRUISE) is a man adrift. The battles he once fought now seem distant and futile. Once he risked his life for honor and country, but, in the years since the Civil War, the world has changed. Pragmatism has replaced courage, self-interest has taken the place of sacrifice and honor is nowhere to be found - especially out West where his role in the Indian Campaigns ended in disillusionment and sorrow.
Somewhere on the unforgiving plains near the banks of the Washita River, Algren lost his soul.
A universe away, another soldier sees his way of life about to disintegrate. He is Katsumoto (KEN WATANABE), the last leader of an ancient line of warriors, the venerated Samurai, who dedicated their lives to serving emperor and country. Just as the modern way encroached upon the American West, cornering and condemning the Native American, it also engulfed traditional Japan. The telegraph lines and railroads that brought progress now threaten those values and codes by which the Samurai have lived and died for centuries.
But Katsumoto will not go without a fight.
The paths of these two warriors converge when the young Emperor of Japan, wooed by American interests who covet the growing Japanese market, hires Algren to train Japan's first modern, conscript army. But as the Emperor's advisors attempt to eradicate the Samurai in preparation for a more Westernized and trade-friendly government, Algren finds himself unexpectedly impressed and influenced by his encounters with the Samurai. Their powerful convictions remind him of the man he once was.
Thrust now into harsh and unfamiliar territory, with his life and perhaps more important, his soul, in the balance, the troubled American soldier finds himself at the center of a violent and epic struggle between two eras and two worlds, with only his sense of honor to guide him."
sounds like "Dances with Samurai"

But low and behold, this 30-something couple sits down next to me and my friend, and open up an industrial sized bag of chips. From the very beginning I knew this was gonna be annoying as hell. After about 15 minutes into the movie and relentless crunching of chips in their mouths and also the crinkling sound of the bag, I started to lose it.
I have never been one to confront people, but on this occasion I was so amazed by this behavior, so I just turned to them, waited for them to acknowledge that I was looking at them, and in a moment of frustration said "You have got to be kidding me!!!!"
I said it real loud, and its really not my style, but I lost it.
Of course these grown adults were too stubborn to take a hint so a few minutes later we moved down front in the neck bending seats but enjoyed the movie anyways cause we didn't have to hear that nonsense.
People are just plain aloof sometimes, have no idea of their surreoundings or the effect their behavior has on those around them.

You know...sometimes you have to get past all this "smallpox blanket" shit to really see "the forest for the trees" (as is term that many of the DHP has been playing out lately).
Hollywood is liberal to its core, even if it occasionally produces a few Charlton Hestons, John Waynes and Governators.
So here comes Cruise with a film that uses the historical era of the westernization of the Japanese military as BACKDROP for a drama about how an American gains perspective on America's warmongering cultural encroachment on the rest of the world...from OVER 100 years ago!
See, if you take the fuckin' bowties off and allow yourselves to breathe, you can get some air to your brains and see that this is what we in the drama business call METAPHOR!
Now how is an actor/producer like Tom Cruise, who uses his influence and power in Hollywood to expose some of these truths you broke Roger Eberts cum Tavis Smiley's CLAIM you covet so much to accomplish anything provacative if HE DOESN'T USE a WHITE AMERICAN MALE SOLDIER as the PROTAGANIST to...hmmm...I don't know...
...PROVE A POINT about the white American male cultural ethos of war and destruction as valuable occurance, hm?
Go get a late pass from Brother 2X's office fools.

The Last Samauri In a nutshell:Tom Cruise plays a cocky hotshot Civil war hero sent to "modernize" the Japanese army only to discover that it is soul that can use some fixing,Hence his adoption of the way of the samauri in which he learns valuable things not picked up in the American military.Sounds like a decent story to me.

Tom Cruise has sneaked under the radar more subversive shit against what's going on in current US policy than Speilberg was able to do with "Minority Report", which includes a final denument that had to have been re-written by Ashcroft himself.

What I'm trying to figure out is how Tom Cruise's character learns bushido in a matter of months. People spent their entire lives trying to live and master what Cruise's Algren did in such short a period of time.
I'm not watching this out of principle.
For those looking for a real, more current, samurai film, find a copy of Twilight Samurai (aka Tasogare Seibei) by Yoji Yamada. There are no flashy special effects, endless carnage, and Tom Cruise in this film. Just a simple, engaging story with outstanding acting performances.

Yeah dude! So am I! YesAsia's taking preorders already in case you weren't aware of it. BTW, Takeshi Kitano's working on another samurai film with director Takashi Miike of Audition, Dead or Alive, and Ichi the Killer fame. I'm really curious about this one.

i think it is typical hollywood racism dressed up to make folk feel good. i mean, what if there was a movie called the Last Massai (a tribe in Kenya who never assimulated after the British colonized Kenya) and the character was a white person? mad1.gif

miike is the man, and i'm sure you know about <www.midnighteye.com>. haven't heard anything about a collaboration between those two, but if miike is involved, i'm sure it's going to be more than interesting. however, i haven't seen any of his "period" works, so perhaps it won't be as frenetic, jarring, or plain disturbing as his other stuff.
anyway, as for samurai "type" movies, i've been told to go see Yojimbo, but haven't had the time to go rent it yet.

And, might I add, blacks should stop discounting things simply because it comes from "white" sources. That is, unless we all don't mind Rush Hour 2 providing us with an expansion of our philosophical point of view.

And, might I add yet again, that the average black muthafuka wouldn't know shit about the samurai ethos, the Bushido code, feudal Japanese history or the westernization of Japan until they picked up enough tidbits in offhanded conversation so that they could "bash" the film.
Answer me this - did any of you keepers of the sancity of Japanese culture think of how other cultures are maligned by your "black" filmmakers and television writers?
Nope. Hypocrites.

i gotta agree with ib ne on this one after seeing the film
but before anything I have to state that the film was great.
The fight scenes especially with the ninjas were one of the best I've seen and the Japanese scenary was also greatly appreciated.
BUTI knew the ending had to be kind of dumb since this IS a big budget Hollywood movie, and being one there can be no such thing as a sad or realistic ending
it is foolish that it was Tom Cruises' character to be the last sole survivor of a masacre to then go to the Emperor of Japan to remind HIM of what honor and the "old Japanese way" is about. This culture is deeply embedded in this mantra and the white american male tells them how it is done. graemlins/jpshakehead.gif
the "holier than thou" & "we're more dignified than you" action is always a subliminal mesage given by Hollywood that passes the audience by.
My friend and immediately commented about this after trying to re-enact some fight scenes amongst each other, my arm still hurts;)

Everyone in Japan knows that the last Samurai was Miyamoto Musashi...
http://www.paysdegex-shotokan.com/images/musashi.jpg
Let's face it, he would have fucked Tom Cruise up good style and sent his ass back to the U.S. as a sushi omeyagi set for his Mom.

I'm waiting for the film about the way that AIG Insurance and Philip Morris Tabaco were given nearly 35 years in the Japanese market without any form of domestic competition due to U.S. legislation..
My god, we might have still been able to enjoy a nice mixed-onsen if it wasn't for the U.S.

The only way Tom Cruise could redeam himself in my eyes is by going to the oscars in a 'Once You Go Asian - Never Caucasian' T-Shirt :D

The author who created Tom Cruise's character was on CNN yesterday afternoon and was surprised that they were making a film based on his character. From what I've read, the film will attempt to introduce a side of Japanese culture that us Americans have not scene or studied.
The way I see it, when was the last time we had a Japanese History lesson in school, or any culture other than European culture?

I got that. The Roger Ebert Cum and Travis Smiley thing is what I am not clear on. Sorry to be confusing, Mack. That line is a jab to all of the knee-jerk film critics on the DHP who post "I'm not going to see that shit.", just because Tom Cruise is white and everyone else in the film isn't. Of course you're not going to see it. You'll get a bootleg from under the viaduct on Stony Island like usual.
BTW - I thought you J-Dubs don't go to the movies. You should get into Scientology. Then you can actually MAKE the movies you're not supposed to see. bwahahahaha! I'm a bastard - I know. </font>[/QUOTE]Man, that's very dangerous talk...but I agree with you totally on this.
I do plan on seeing the film but I'm going in with both eyes open and my radar up.
Funny, you all should mention Minority Report...if you've seen the movie, go and read Phillip K. Dick's book and compare the two.... Phil Dick was a visionary and a man who could read the tracings of the writing on the wall. If you still don't believe me, go and read "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" (i.e. Blade Runner).
