I have a new weekly one, and have had these kinds of gigs before. Just dropped some dimes getting all the latest shit.
I was wondering how many heads also do this as a side gig, or don't even want to admit to themselves that this has become thier main gig, even though they would rather have a slamming house night.

I used to. But I loathe radio music. I couldn't live with myself if I started spinnin that garbage again. I can't understand how people listen to WGCI all week and then want to party to the same music on the weekend.

I like a lot of the new production, but I also need a way to dispose of these disposable records and get more money back off of them when I am done.

Dong,I used to do it for a living. It's cool, but I just can not tolerate some of it anymore.I still have offers thrown at me,but I really have to drop some serious loot to catch up.I did a club spot for a year and a half playing the same shit over and over. The tripped out thing is they loved that shit!!!!
I had fun doing it,cause i took a break from the scene in Chicago.I chilled for a year, due to burnout, got married and came back out with a vengence.
I know it's easy money, but it's kinda hard to turn my ear and eyes to some of the shit that goes on in those types of sets.I don't like being a hypocrite.
Like I tell folks,if you are a dj,you should still have some tunes that can get you in anywhere playing music,meanig...a diverse collectin of tunes if you are in this for a hustle.
i got one a few weeks ago but most of my hiphop is in deep storage so my buddy is filling in while i start digging out the goods. knowing my lazy ass, that will be a long time :D

The spot is down with me playing different music, but the inside word is I should mainly do hip-hop. I'll play some classics, some rock and 80's hits, but mainly hip-hop in the middle of the night.
You are right about the same records over and over. Once I get that intitial fat stack of the current shit, I only need to make some minor add ons if a couple of mega hits come out.
I'll be literaly making at LEAST 5x what I was making at my most recent house gig. No joke, 5x.

I have a Hip-Hop and R&B residency 2 nights a week. I also do 2 other nights, 1 strictly House (helps keep me sane) and the other which is broadcast on the radio down here (Sacramento, Ca.) where I play commercial dance stuff and Hip-Hop. Thankfully I work at a record store and I get all my Hip-Hop free via promo's. I always dread going into my Hip-Hop gigs wondering how many requests I'm gonna get for 50 Cent but I end up having a good time cuz the crowd will get hella hype and I can vibe off that.

Do it Donger.
All that money you're making you can spend on nice rare disco cuts...

I was a hip hop DJ for years. And yeah, it pays A LOT more than most house gigs. I got really burnt out, though. Now I still do it once a month at Frank's just to keep my skills at a respectable level, plus there's just enough crusty old freaks at Frank's that I can play "Shakyla" or "Resurrection" and people don't ask "what the hell is that shit?". Plus, I play a lot of reggae, and I really need to play reggae every now and then just to get that vibe.
And despite what the DHP purists may have you believe, there is definitely still hot shit coming out on the regular. Have you heard that new Kardinal Offishal track? That shit is ridiculous.

If I had a Hip Hop Gig I would Join FunkMasterFlex's "Franchise" record pool. I know firsthand that they get the promos very early.
Although it is limited to commercial stuff..hey come on...people who party to Hip Hop are commercial..they would walk off the floor to some of the new conscious stuff.

I did the funk/hip hop/r&b/reggae thing for quite a while eventually incorporating other styles such as house & classics as well.
It's good money and can be fun when the crowd is hyped (and you know they will cause they know almost everysingle track you play). Also if you are creative you can make 'em go nuts.
BTW Donger I'm going to be in town this weekend. Are you on anywhere....????
