This book was immense FUN! Diaz already proved himself a writer to watch with his collection "Drown" - which I highly recommend - that documents growing up Dominican in the NY/NJ area with style and flair.
The new book? Oh what fun! Learned a bit about Dominican history, enjoyed the jokes...

this book is HARD , is what it is. I'm trying to catch all the historical inforamtion in the damn footnotes so I can even understand the thing. But I'm only through the introduction. I hope it starts to flow better soon.

Really? Just relax. You can come back to the footnotes! There is a great deal of historical info, but you don't need to "study" it to get the gist. Another teacher friend of mine (who has been teaching 30 years) said that she'd replace Catcher in the Rye with it as a great coming of age story...
