what are the key requirements/functions you need out of it?
you should ask how service is for all options from people using them in your town.
I went with the motorola Q //Verizon, myself. Job required it , like you.

I've had both and prefer the Blackberry. You don't have to sign on to the Internet as the Blackberry service is always on.

I've used both and use to support the Treos for users at my company and it was one pain in the ass after another with the Treos. Get the BB! I have two (1 work/1 personal) and I've NEVER had any problems with them.

I have a Treo 700 (personal) and a Blackberry 8820 (for work). I just got my BB a few days ago and I'm really fillin it. The new 8820 has WiFi which is cool as well. If I had to make a choice for a work phone get the 8820.

never had a BB but a Treo for some time and can tell you for corporate email it sucks.
My co-workers with BB have a much easier time retrieving.
But treos are fun, the softwares (games, tv, mp3, excel, word, PP, etc) are unbeliveable. Its a all in one phone
Get the Blackberry. I've got the Blackberry 8830 WE and I love it!

this is a false choice, unless your company is imposing it on you.
they told me to go with a blackberry, trio, or motorola Q. My instinct was blackberry. something about the trio being so heavily windows told me to stay away. w/the blackberry, i was told that the older models are better at getting reception in this building. that the actual phone part of it is weak, that if you don't have a blackberry server, it's not at all fast, etc etc.
the motorola Q on the other hand has a phone that works well, has your email, your music, your videos, your camera, your video recording, your web browsing, etc etc etc etc etc. So do yourself a favor and check it out! it's well known that motorola makes good phones.
only complaint about the piece I have is that the email can not be checked every 60 seconds, which i sometimes need. I can check manually, and it can check itself every 5 minutes. but i need automatic check every 60 seconds when i'm in t he middle of communication emergencies. so i have to press a button.
but that's it.
so while everyone knows about the blackberry, look at the other alternative(s) if your company lets you.

had a treo 700 - loved it at first, then it started crashing/rebotting for no reason. now I'm a true BB believer. I rock the 8703 also...never had trouble, very easy to manage texts, e-mails, and the net. much better!

Yup. Very user friendly. If you have never used the BB, the Treo is great until you do. And about half the weight.

The Windows Mobile devices made by HTC are worth a look at well. You can get an app called BBConnect for WM5 and WM6 devices that lets you use the Blackberry messaging format.

Actually Christian, you may have the second-generation Q (known as the Q9) which rectified some of the problems in the first Q models. There's also a Q9H for HSDPA (GSM) networks coming out soon, if it isn't out already.
Much of your phone choice depends on your provider here in Canada.

I have the Treo 700WX & at first it's cool as hell. But it crashes on me often. I've had to reboot the damn thing a few time already since I've had it. When my contract is up, I'll try the BB.

My girl has the latest Palm, I've got a BB pearl and a 7100. Waiting for my curve.
For me, it's BB every time. The Palm crashes alot and the BB's operating system is bullet proof. Don't let the media scares about the e-mail short outs in the summer scare you- BBs are quality.
Although my girl's Palm has that drug wars game. THAT could sway me.
