Stories like this lead me to believe that he is. You euros are crazy. graemlins/rofl.gif
So you want to be famous?

British soccer star David Beckham has fame, fortune, a pop star wife (Victoria, formerly Posh of the Spice Girls) and no privacy. England's soccer star had a physical examination Tuesday in Spain, a final step before his transfer from Manchester United to Real Madrid becomes official. The procedures took a little less than two hours, something we know for sure because the process had many witnesses. Beckham's physical was televised on 39 channels worldwide, among them Real Madrid's pay-per-view station, and even had a sponsor--the Spanish health insurer Grupo Sanitas, which coughed up $415,000. For Wednesday's official introduction, 500 media passes have been requested. Talk about a circus.

Did you have to mention him? I'm so bored of the whole thing that I could actually cry. If this is the furore about a medical, then what's going to happen the first game he plays? I shudder to think.

Is he comparable to the great Pele? I don't like soccer but I knew of Pele. I still don't like soccer & never heard of this guy.

He's a talented player, Team Captain at Manchester U., Team Captain of the England National Team...I don't he's as big as Michael though. He's got money, fame and a nice piece of ass and that's about it. No need to compare him to the greatest, maybe one of the good ones.
I don't get it, maybe because America is not a soccer friendly country. Europe is and so is the rest of the world but that's another story.

NO, he is not even close to being comparable to Pele or Ronaldo. In fact, Beckham will only be the 6th best player on his own team! (Zidane, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Raul, Figo).
If you compared soccer to basketball, he would be like a Vince Carter--flashy player with a signature move (dunk v. free kick), but not a cornerstone of a winning team.

one thing that needs to be understood about football is that it does not work like basketball at all. in all blasphemy, basketball can be won by one or two guys on a team. that guy leaves, and Chicago is out of the picture until some moneybag buys another star into town.
football does not work that way. it is a straight team effort, so it is rather ludicrous to start comparisons. the players come and go, the club remains, the tradition remains. as far as Becks is concerned, he is a great player, and he has done a ton for english football, both sports- and imagewise. he's moving into the biggest clubside worldwide, but within that team i think the only comparison that can be made is with regard to Figo, positionwise.

Lol - David Peckham - one of my sisters younger friends used to kick about with him in Leytonstone - she give me a signed autograph of him one day - went straight in the bin - should have E-Bayed it though. And as for his wife, iv'e heard some stuff about her..........
As for comparing him to Jordan - no way - can't even be compared to Viera, Figo, Pires. Why do you think Fergie sold him???

Hmm, I think basketball is also a team sport, so I am not sure whether your point is valid.
You can still measure the impact of a particular player on a game, and all I am saying is that Beckham does not make as much impact as some other players in the world right now, therefore he is overrated, in comparison to others. But he makes up for this with his image.

Overrated to say the least, but an absolute top player for big teams economy wise, and that's just why Real Madrid bought him. Their president has made a vow to buy a star player every year, it started with Figo, then Zidane (=> that's the Michael Jordan of football!), then Ronaldo and now Beckham.
Merchandising of these four players alone warrants the amounts they are getting paid. Beckham will not make the team any stronger, but he won't weaken them and he's instrumental in keeping Real in position as leading team in the world concerning image and marketing, and don't forget that the rivalry with Barcelona was a main factor in getting him (recently elected Barcelona president promised his supporters that Beckham would come to his team, sike!).
On the football side of things, Beckham has a great strike and cross, but that's about it, good player but I hope he doesn't try to compete with Zidane, Raul, Ronaldo and Figo, because they will crush him and make him look like an ass on the pitch, and for those who know, Zidane can make anyone look like an ass...

They needed someone else with nice hair - Raul and Figo were not enough to compensate for Zidane and Ronaldo.

I just know that all the real supporters including myself will be watching every move he makes very closely... and if he ****s up, he's gonna hear it...
But like Red said, he's the biggest money-maker in soccer for the moment, but I don't see him adding something to the team.
I just hope they buy someone for defence...

David Beckham and Micheal Owen are the two most overated players on the planet.
Madrid have wasted their dosh they have better players on their bench than Beckham.
Beckham can't go past a player, can't tackle, can't header a ball. (George Best is also quoted as saying this. He is just a product of the English media. He`ll be back playing for Arsenal within 1.5 seasons.

Beckham is very popular in Japan, he just did a week-long tour over here prior to joining Real Madrid. For which he earnt 500,000,000 yen ($4,235,493) per day!!!!! graemlins/rofl.gif
He also told Japanese fans that he will join a Japanese J-League team when he hits 33 years old.
Something that Jordan could never hope to acheive, because he plays a localized sport, USA, South America, Croatia and Spain.
Football is played everywhere in the world..
Saying that, Beckham is no Ronaldo :D
He's a money maker and good for advertising.
Fingers-crossed that Leeds United buy a couple of Japanese players, that's worth near 5 mill in TV rights alone, I hear Nakata's being touted by God's Own Team..

Does that count?
For me Jordan is by far and away a greater sportsman, but from a popularity/marketing point of view they will be very close to one another. And don't give me that 'he's not famous in the US' hobwash, the US ain't the world...

I think this post sums up what Jordan means for the majority of people in the world: a pair of shoes. Basketball is not a worldwide game in the way that soccer is. Michael Jordan does not have the same worldwide visibility as a sportsman as did, say, Muhammad Ali or John McEnroe.
In my view, Beckham is an underrated player, since he's generally regarded by football fans as a pop-star shagging dilettante. If it wasn't for him, England wouldn't have qualified for the last World Cup without him (he saved us singlehandedly against Greece ). A fat lot of good it did us, though.
I'm old enough to remember press and public reactions to George Best at his peak and I'm afraid to say that he was regarded in exactly the same way as Beckham. In retrospect he's the best player ever to come from the British Isles and yet was accorded no respect because he was flash and hung out in nightclubs. The biggest mistake Manchester United ever made with him was not making him captain in a declining team, when he carried them for two seasons.
In 20 years' time, when the hype has died down, people will be re-evaluating Beckham, too.
