this is actually kind of funny to me because I doubt if this would solve the problem completely
I thought there was some type of surgery that a person could undergo to correct the problem
i wake myself up from a loud snore/snort, only when i fall asleep sitting up - like on a train or plane - it's the weirdest experience ... b/c you wake up suddenly and it takes a moment to realize it was the sound of your own snore that just jolted you out of slumber. its like you hear it first then a few seconds later realize it was yourself you just heard .. its surreal. and embarrassing
worse than my once in awhile snorts out loud is that i drool ... i'm a stomach sleeper, so i'm all dead to the world with my mouth slightly open just drooling away ... with that and my light snoring (i usually am just breathing heavy, not really snoring, except for the once in a blue moon big snore which wakes me up) i can only imagine how uncute i am sleeping :( :(

Breathe Right Nasal strips (my mom swears by them) and if you have a gut lose it, snoring gets worse if you're carrying a disco belly.

Along with the breathe right strips, which by the way work VERY well,
there's also something else on the market...

I have a friend who snored uncontrollably and drove his wife crazy. He had a surgery that helped dramatically, but he wears this machine to help him breathe better at night. It makes him look like Hannibal Lechter but he says he sleeps better than he did his whole life.

I had the same surgery this year along with a couple of other proceedures all done at once ***Ouuuuch!*** I thought that would cure everything...well..
IT DIDNT! :cussing: According to my dear husband (who by the way like to act like he dosent snore at all Yeah RIGHT!!) I still snore. he says its not as bad as before the surgery, but he still has to leave the t.v. on at night and turn it up when my snoring bothers him. this causes a whole different problem because Im a very vivid dreamer,so when the tv is on at night and I can hear it in my sleep,I have these weird dreams. like Andy Griffith show can be on and Ill dream that Im doing a party in Mayberry and Aunt Bee is jacking her ass off to what Im playing with Barney! :conf44: There has GOT to Be a soloution to this! You sound symptomatic of sleep apnea. I'm guessing that the increase in snoring has come along with some weight gain over the years? The main cause of sleep apnea is weight. The extra pressure on the throat and upper chest area causes the soft pallet to collapse at night and obstructs your airway. Then you either completely stop breathing or your breathing gets weak. This triggers an arousal to compensate and keep you alive, then a sudden gasp of air. This is the main 'snore'. Your body wakes up, but you most likely aren't aware of the arousal. So you can potentionally be waking up all night long. May get up to use the washroom a number of times at night and frequently sleepy during the day. Possibly waking up with dry mouth and headaches.
The more dangerous part of apnea is that every time your body wakes up like that your heart ramps up. It's a lot like turning your car on and off all night long. So little by little damage is done and can lead to heart attack and/or stroke. Since your not really sleeping your metabolism gets out of whack. Chemically you become increasingly imbalanced and can gain even more weight. In men it can even lead to erectial dysfunction.
The primary treatment of sleep apnea is called CPAP(Continuous Positive Air Pressure). It's a mask that fits over your nose and blows air in to keep your airway open when your sleeping. This allows you to breathe evenly at night, stops the snoring, and allows you to start getting deeper and healthy sleep. Many people even lose ten to fifteen pounds in the first couple of months just from using the cpap machine.
Now some people may have issues with tonsils or sinus that can be removed with some surgery, but that's not the case for most. There are a couple of surgeries directly for sleep apnea. There is a pillar technique used. That three small pillars are inserted to keep the soft pallet up. Also a newer one is where a small electrical charge is sent to the soft pallet causing it to harden. The success rate for both surgeries is pretty low and I've heard that recovery can be painful. I've had a number of patients get a surgery and a year later still have to come back for the cpap machine.
You would have to potentially use the cpap machine every night for the rest of your life. If the cause of the sleep apnea is just weight, then losing the weight can totally sure you. I've had a couple of patients totally change their lives and lose a large amount of weight. They were retested and didn't have sleep apnea anymore. If it's structural then there isn't a whole lot that can be done other than using the cpap machine. This is usually the case with someone that is in their twenties and at a normal weight, and/or physically active; yet still have sleep apnea. Also anyone that is having any kind of weight loss surgery must have a sleep study before the surgery since most getting weight loss surgery also have sleep apnea.
It's definetly worth asking your doctor about having a sleep study. If you're in Chicago PM me and I can tell you the clinics that I work for.
