Sgt. Asan Akbar (according to CNN News artical http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/03/24/101.attack.ap/index.html ) he was not allowed to participate in the first Gulf War because of his religion.
In Another artical he stated it's hard for Blacks to get promoted in the Army.
As a former U.S. Army Combat Engineer I state that he is telling lies.
Promotions are determined by - Time in service, Time in grade (current rank), and the cut-off as of promotion points.
If a soldier need 700 points to get promoted from E-5 to E-6 and they have the required points, the first thing they do is let their chain of command know that they made the "cut off" (as it is called) and they are promoted the the next rank by the company commander.
Promotion points are gained via Awarded medals, schools or corrospondance courses.
Now this is the kicker, Promotion points for Combat Engineers are always low and in most cases lower than other promotion points of other Army job titles.
Most people who plan a 20 year career as a Combat Engineer will make the rank of E-6 in little as 6 years or up to 10 years in the Army, they then wait to be put on the E-7 list to be promoted to Sergeant First Class (which is a promotion given by DOD)
It's hard to keep Combat Engineers and most people do 3 years and get out the Army. For that reason alone Enginners are quickly promoted from the rank of E-1 thru E-5, it a soldier take a few courses and win a few awards...becoming E-6 is a snap.
If it is so hard for Blacks to get promoted - my Army buddies male & female would not be on the E-8 list then soon become First Sergeants or Sergeant Majors.
Akbar is full of it!
He is attempting to use his religion and nationality as pawns in a pity party. He was not with us during Desert Storm due to his religous beliefs and my best guess is...he thought that would get him out of this conflict.
Upon enlistment / re-enlistment a question is asked and that question is "are you a countenious(s/p) objector? Do you have any religious or moral belief that prevent you from performing the duties required in the event of war?"
Anyone who would grenade their fellow soldier will go as far as "The Oklahoma City Bomber" & "Beltway Sniper" former Combat Engineers.
