I once hear a DJ play "O superman" by Laurie Anderson. He just dropped it in the middle of a house set. And it worked!

Peace to all true music lovers

Once in Chicago back in the 80s I heard a DJ drop "Brand New Day" from the movie The Wiz. That's one of my all time favorite movies. I looked around at the crowd and people who knew the movie were goin' off but most people was like "huh?"

I also heard the "Emerald City Sequence" from The Wiz in a club once - where the colors change from green to red to gold. Most people didn't get it.

I was DJing a "Bartender's Ball" once in Portland , Oregon with DJ Cut Chemist (from Jurassic 5 / Ozomatli). The Bartenders Ball is a yearly event thrown by some cigarette company where all the club bartenders get to drink for free at a big party. Anyway, Cut Chemist played the theme from "Cheers" on one turntable, then proceeded to make a hip hop beat to go under it using the other turntable, cutting up one kick and one snare. People lost their minds. I have mad respect for that dude. He also played an entire hip hop set of strictly underground joints and had the crowd buggin'.

any track by bjork... especially if it's one of her slower / ambient cuts dropped over a deep house track. i'm a huge bjork fan but i really never expect to hear her when i'm not at home. when a dj does play some bjork while i'm out, i am truly overwhelmed.

"The Monster Mash" as the last record of the night at Venus in Nottingham. Forget the DJ but it may have been Justin Robertson, can't remember.

Everyone was off their heads too and danced along.

Mesopotamia - B-52s..
I'd never heard this in a club before. Danny Krivit played it at Body an Soul. It must be a "staple" bc a guy with a mohawk and a big diva woman were belting the words.

one time I heard Mark Farina drop Paul Simon's "You Can Call Me Al" from the Graceland album. It worked very well!!
A couple years ago I saw a program on VH1 that showed them in the studio laying down tracks for that album and the part of the song where the bass is solo'd is played forwards and then in reverse, this gives it a pretty cool effect. Plus the horns on that song are dope.
I've heard Harvey play lots of different stuff too, but this seemed the most out of place cause it was Mark Farina and in my experiences he usually just sticks to house...

The Cars "Just What I Needed" is one example I can recall - he ran it over some track that didn't really fit, I think he was feeling a little too inspired by Derrick Carter, who can actually get away with shit like that.

Steve Hurley opened up his mix with a skit by "Oscar the grouch", that always sounded cool.

Also Shake Senora and The Lion sleeps tonight played by Lenorard Remix..

Around '94 I saw Africa Bambaataa play in Kentucky and he dropped a Foreigner track......fu*king FOREIGNER. It was at least compatible with my sense of humor if nothing else but I can't say as much for the hoards of suburban ravelings who came to hear electro and glow-stick each other senseless.

Probably Urgent by Foreigner - which is a great track.

I have an old Gordon Kaye tape which start with an Elvis number. Sounds (and actually is) quite bizarre, but it works.

Like others above, Harvey has had me dancing to some things I wouldn't have expected - particularly tracks by INXS...
