I'm trying to connect to the internet using an ethernet card (properly installed) and an ADSL modem. I know the connection works as its working on my Mac. Its Windows ME I'm using. Can anyone help (bearing in mind I'm a PC dunce)

Make sure that the Modem recognizes the Network adapter. Make sure you have TCP/IP installed to be able to access the internet.

One last thing, check your cables. The Modem should have some lights on it and they should be blinking sporatically whether or not you're on the internet. The lights on you're network adapter should be doing the same as well.If they are not, then you may have a wiring issue.

Peace

I think its something to do with it not connecting over PPPoE or the LAN. The connection works on my Mac when I choose PPPoE, I'm just trying to find the same connection type in the PC

Remember that you're not using a PPP adapter to access the internet with your PC, you're ethernet adapter is the main link.

Click on Start, then Run, and type "winipcfg".

Verify that your Ethernet Adapter is able to get an IP address, if not you may need to click on "Renew" to get an address.

Its getting an address in winipcfg so it must be a setting within the computer.

Go to run > type cmd.exe > type ping yahoo.com

If it replies you should be ok. If not, release your IP addy, renew it, and reboot.

Pings work, pinging the modem works. It just won't connect in Windows for some reason.

When you start your browser does it give you an error message?

It says it can't connect to the server. I've tried the setup wizard as a LAN and still it won't work.

Do you have a firewall? If so, turn it off. Did you get this message: "Unable to open C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\"
