View Full Version : speaking about new songs, is it necessary to have the latest joints???

I've read how DJ's spend over $300.00 a month on the newest cuts but is that necessary? When i spin, yes i get new cuts but i got to at least play it for a couple of months to let the peeps recognize it and feel it. People like to dance but it's always a "plus" to have the crowd sing along. It may be cool to introduce new joints but maybe introduce a couple a songs a week instead your whole set being "look at all the new hot stuff i got!"

agree or disagree?

I guess it matters if you're a cutting edge DJ.
Which one are you?

I don't think so. Unless you build up an audience that is comfortable with what you are playing, whether it be new stuff, old, unreleased, it really shouldn't matter IMO.

It doesn't really matter. Make them dance. Enjoy what you do. That's ALL you have to worry about......JMJ ;)

I buy what I like. Sometimes it's just a few bucks in my pocket and sometimes it's $200+. Play what makes people dance. You can spend $10,000 on records, but if you don't play what makes people dance then what good is spending all that money? Just play what you like and what you think will make people dance.

True but it's funny how some DJ's act like their always ahead of the game.
example:
I remember how Benny's "satisfaction" came out in Jan of this year (i think) and i got the cut and played it a few times. But the crowd wasn't sure about it so i didn't play it again til March when i heard it around a bit more. Well, when i told a friend of mine that i played it in March,
he said...
"man that cut is old, it came out months ago!"

And i said." true but it's bangin NOW!!!"

Why is the guy at the record store any authority? His main purpose is to push product. If you see him dancing to the latest Spice Girls dance remix, does it make it any good? Use your judgement. If YOU feel it, then go for it.

man, jusy buy what you feel.If you buy a cut and it's hot,why wait 3 months until others are playin' it to drop it?makes no sense to me.

I can hear a tune,I may like it,I'll play it or put it on a mix, when I hear someone else rock it,that's helping push the song,so I will play it more.Makes sense don't it??

Do your damn thing.I do not have folks pull tunes for me.I have spent hours in a store and left with a few records. Then I may go back and get a few more after I may have heard them out.

Don't let dj's dictate what you play or purchase.I have some tunes I have bought months ago that still sound fresh.I have tunes from a few years ago that still sound fresh.Sometimes it's best to stay away from trendy shit, because quality is better than the new hot shit... ;)

magic_juan hell no he's not ALWAYS an authority! i used to feel uneasy about that when i first started collecting. now i'm like... "man who do you think you are trying to hype this garbage?!" graemlins/rofl.gif

I buy only what i like...even if that means leaving the store with nothing but some flyers...

Nope. They get a little ticked, but who cares. It's my money and it's my investment.

;) They do take a little personal don't they? But they get over it...plus, if they were in your shoes they'd react the same. I doubt most are ballin enough to afford to buy stuff just because.

For sure i play what i like, it's weird though how other DJ's always want to feel like they are ahead of the music.
Actually i remember this one party that i played after the main DJ (i had a 2-3am slot) and he was playing some hot cuts but a little agressive. He had people dancin but the crowd was a little young (early 20's). First cut i played was Spark Da Meth (yes yes ya'll) and all thos kids lost their dam minds. I put my latest cuts to the side and followed that track with CZR-Seizure and the young kids were eating that.
my partner was looking at me and i was like graemlins/conf44.gif
Time to rearrange my set.

Man when I was in Dancetracks a while back this dude started pulling all this stuff out(I appreciated the fact that he wanted to help) and he was like this is THE hottest shit in NY. I was in that store for at least an hour and a half..I think I left with 4 cuts.

I usually buy tunes with the intent of saying to myself....."Can I still rock this 3 to six months from now?". Not to mention the fact, You buy it today..... Two weeks later Here comes the remixed versions and after that the white label bootleg......AND after that the overpriced ass triple pack! Spend Wisely!!
