Doctors are over-medicating their patients...
I say this b/c lately every problems seems to have a little pill that "solves it".

If your depressed there are dozens of anti-depresants... the first thing a doctor gives you instead of saying lets find out why ur like this... graemlins/conf44.gif

I've been reading up on this actually. Seems the pharmaceutical companies are actually creating new conditions all the time, so that they can then market drugs to people who "suffer" from them. For instance, VIAGRA. The drug gets you hard. Well, a huge percentage of those who suffer from impotence have psychological reasons why they can't get (or keep) it up - those issues are now tossed to the wind since Viagra is available. But shouldn't those issues be dealt with so that the poor guy doesn't have to pop a pill every time he wants to get some for the rest of his life? Not according to the pharmaceutical and medical community. Just pop a pill and everything will be alright.

There were some really good threads on depression - do a search if the topic is of interest as there were some great posts.

If people would eat better, excercise more and take the bullshit a little bit less seriously, a lot of the pharmaceutical companies would go out of business.

they're giving ritalin to anxious/hyper kids in the daycare who're crying for mommy.

that's the problem with society today...there's no critical thinking about the way we live, our problems and what causes those problems. i'm sure that beneath every medical condition there's a physical problem that needs to be dealt with. a few off the top of my head:

acute heartburn (i have this problem, btw)
- treated with pulposid (speculated that it causes heart attacks)
natural solution: back off on the coffee/starch/spicy food (daaaaammmmnn!!!!!)

headaches
- treated with tylenol (KNOWN to cause acute liver damage over time)
headaches could be caused by dehydration, poor diet, and lack of circulation (i.e. you need to exercise)

obesity
- was treated with fen/phen (known to cause valvular heart disease)
natural solution: change your diet, dammit! eliminate starch, animal fat, dairy. exercise!

See what I mean? The humiliating task of evaluating our own lifestyles is being excused in lieu of some magic pill that'll solve all our problems. We have to learn to take responsibility for ourselves, critically analyse what the 'powers at be' are feeding us and learn ot think for ourselves!

that's a loud yesssss! we are a medicated society always looking for the quick fix. patch this or that, plug this and that. but don't actually go to the root of the problem and heal it.

exactly. there have been numerous studies that actually show that we are killing ourselves with medication. it's a never-ending cycle that profits drug companies and their stockholders while keeping the public in the dark. I highly recommend this article on the misuse of antibiotics (http://www.consciouschoice.com/health/antibiotics1207.html) and this article on how household disinfectants screw with our immune systems (http://www.garynull.com/Documents/Spectrum/antibiotic_resistance_.htm)

Gary Null wrote the following 7 steps to living a healthy life, and I think those who look for solutions in a pill might want to re-examine their thought process and do the following (I need to, too - but I don't take any prescriptions, almost ever)

Step 1: Identify and Eliminate Risk Factors. Understand the benefits of avoiding sugar, caffeine, alcohol, tobacco and dairy.

Step 2: Cleanse and Detoxify. You can assist your body's natural elimination process through cleansing the colon and liver with water and juices. Learn what nutrients and herbs to add to your diet as you work on stopping disease-causing behavior.

Step 3: Rejuvenate. Turn off the disease process and turn on the wellness force. Learn about healthier food selections, like sprouts and seaweed.

Step 4: De-stress. Learn how to face crises positively. Change how you react to negative stimuli by understanding who and what establishes your limitations.

Step 5: Remove Toxins from Personal & Home Environment. Understand the importance of ridding the body of the toxic effects of fluoride, antibiotics, mercury fillings and laxatives. Learn how to improve your home and workplace by purifying the water and air, as well as minimizing dangerous electromagnetic fields.

Step 6: Exercise. You do not need to be a professional athlete to understand the benefits of "fitness".

Step 7: Stop the Excuses. Learn to recognize old, destructive patterns of behavior and to realize why there are "No More Excuses" for not being who we were meant to be.

One other thing from his site:

"Spices are remarkably effective in destroying pathogens. Of 30 microorganisms studied, 100% were inhibited by onion and garlic, and 80% by hot peppers. Many spices that have weak antibiotic powers can become more potent when combined with other spices.

In addition to making food safer, spices have two other effects: they provide variety to bland diets, and they can enhance digestion. Chili peppers, for example, aid digestion by increasing salivation and promoting intestinal action."
