View Full Version : An eye for an eye ??????
As I was trying to do the Polital Compass survey that David Mancuso posted on Friday I came by this question.. "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth"
And found that I couldn't really answer that one... B/c I feel that this sometimes would be good, but then again.. this would create caios..
How do you feel about that statement???
You can't defeat evil by being evil, but you can bring good by being good. I don't agree with that statement(An eye for eye....), but that's just me.

How do you feel about that statement??? I didnt see Davids post, but I think people misinterpret that statement to justify revenge but when I read that passage in the Bible, in context to the rest of that chapter, I got the impression "an eye for an eye" was not about revenge but about "equal justice". An injustice committed against me should hold the same weight as an injustice done to a king, a movie star, or a wealthy person and the punishment for such should be the same. So if a homeless man is murdered and Bill Clinton is murdered, the murderers should have the same punishment because of the crime and not because of who the person is. Unfortunately in this society if you have enough money you can pretty much pay to keep yourself out of jail or reduce your sentence.

Or they get 15 years with a chance for paroll in 5.. and it happens so much..

It's tough when "justice" and fair punishment for a crime is to be determined. As far as the saying goes, I'll add, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth to me means Balance. All things must be balanced eventually. That belief however is not a guarantee that I will be able to see justice being served, nor that I will consider it fair if I do get to see it. I just have to believe in a universal justice/balance. Hard as that is to accept in the face of a great loss ... as I'm not God, I choose to interpret the saying that way.
