Why did you specifically position the two background images on top of the shoulders of the foreground image? Is it to speak of the burden and troubles she has to carry on her shoulder?
Is the Black and white color contrast a reflection of a bi-racial identity or the racial discord in America which worries her?

Linda says that it is a self portrait of her at the age of 19-20 done as a wood print. It does reflect how she felt when she first left Chicago to come up here.

To come up where?...Was it an issue of leaving the black community to attend a lily white University and live in a lily white environment?....
Hey Alex!...how the fcuk did you know it was a wood print?

Hey Alex!...how the fcuk did you know it was a wood print?P, you have such a way with words. She says no, leaving family and friends was hard. She attended the America Academy of Art in Chicago for two years which was culture shock enough. When we moved to Madison, WI to attend the University we lived in a black community. This is not to say their were not issues at this University but we just dealt with them like we dealt with the same issues back in Chicago.

Hey Alex!...how the fcuk did you know it was a wood print?sorry if this sound boring. i thought it was a wood print because of the quality of line and composition. especially by the neck you can see the chisel's finger print. wood cuts unlike copper (usually finely detailed) or mono prints (color mostly) are based on contrast and the thickness (or lack of thicknes) of line. btw, paradigm, your critique was very thoughtful and genuine. smile.gif

I had a feeling it was about leaving family to be in a new place. I have seen that expression on peoples faces at the bus terminal and at air ports many times. To capture emotion to such detail says alot about the artist......
