What, no Song of the South?:jpshakehead:
"Purple Rain" greatest film soundtrack: Vanity Fair
If you've hummed along, tapped your feet, or even danced in your seat while watching "Purple Rain," "Saturday Night Fever" or "Trainspotting," you're not alone.
The soundtracks from those movies have been named among the 50 greatest by the editors of Vanity Fair magazine. The full list will be revealed next month in a one-time Conde Nast magazine, Movies Rock, for subscribers of its 14 titles.
"Purple Rain" topped the chart even though it was described as "perhaps the best badly acted film ever," editors at Vanity Fair said, while "Trainspotting" came in at No. 7 and "Saturday Night Fever" was eighth.
The Vanity Fair editors said the "Purple Rain" soundtrack was a flawless combination of "funk, R&B, pop, metal, and even psychedelia into a sound that defined the '80s."
"A Hard Day's Night" came in a No. 2, followed by "The Harder They Come," "Pulp Fiction," "The Graduate" and "Superfly." "American Graffiti" and "The Big Chill" rounded out the top 10.
"Saturday Night Fever's" soundtrack is "required listening for anyone looking to heat up the dance floor," the editors said. "The white suit? Not so much."
Movies Rock, which will feature stories and photos of the projects, stars, directors and musicians who created the selected movies, launches ahead of a two-hour CBS broadcast of the same title in December.

Purple Rain is by far#1.
I was in Virgin Records on Broadway last night and they had the CD and Movie for $10 a piece.
I would've purchased but I got 3 copies of each already:conf06:

Superfly.......Top to bottom
Greatest music ever put to a film, hands down.
Purple Rain made me a Prince fanatic, but Superfly made Curtis Mayfield a god in my eyes. The greatest thing about Superfly is that the soundtrack actually contradicts the film in its message. You can't pull that off without being a genius. Another note: Purple Rain had no soundtrack themes, just songs. Superfly had the "Junkie Chase" and I think its important for a film to at least have some music that reflects particular scenes in the movie. As much I like Purple Rain, I still like the "WIZ" soundtrack much better. But Suerfly is the greatest soundtrack of all time imo. It is the Muhammed Ali of soundtracks.

Can you name more than two songs on this soundtrack? Bodyguard had maybe the greatest soundtrack single of alltime, but take that away and whats left? Superfly had Superfly, Freddie's Dead, Eddie, You Should Have Known Better, Gimme Your Love, etc. It was a soundtrack, and not just a great single. You know what I mean?

Bill Lee's score for School Daze was sick too. Terence Blanchard's score for Malcolm X was mind-boggling. Spike has had some really good scores for his films, which might go down as his greatest legacy.

"Let's do the Time Warp again!" Rocky Horror was an awful film, but the soundtrack was great.
At the expense of an internet whipping, I'd add "Waiting to Exhale" as a great soundtrack. It doesn't have the theme or scene music, which I feel is important, but the songs on there are fantastic.

A Charlie Brown Christmas :spinning:
The most slept-on soundtrack mentioned so far. Vince Guaraldi was a genius. I'd watch Charlie Brown just to hear Vince's compositions. He had a very similar melodic style to Bill Evans. I'd also watch the Pink Panther just to hear Henry Mancini's compositions.

Trouble man
The Mack
Lady Sings the Blues
Trouble Man was a great soundtrack. Marvin Gaye put his foot in that one.
The Mack came close to being as good as Superfly as a soundtrack. Willie Hutch was an incredible songwriter. He also did the Foxy Brown soundtrack, which was really good. Pam Grier autographed my vinyl copy.

My best:
Good Morning Vietnam - one of my alltime favourites;
Lost in Translation - the best soundtrack to have come out in the last 5 years, Sofia Coppola must be a real music nerd, because her film music choices of late have been impeccable, see Marie Antoinette;
Paris Texas - essential!
In the Mood for Love - this was my introduction to Nat King Cole's spanish oeuvre
Lost Highway - For This Mortal Coil's "Song To The Siren" (which curiously doesn't appear on the OST)
The Harder They Come
The Piano
Veer Zaara - Bollywood may not be everyones's cup of tea, particularly because of the music; which is why this OST featuring long lost titles by the late Madan Mohan - newly interpreted by a host of singers taking turns in dueting with Lata Mangeshkar, Mohan's principal muse - is sooooooo outstanding! If you ever buy one Bollywood soundtrack, get this one!
Anything by Robert Rodriguez - I like my mariachi music!

The ballroom-cum-club scene in Marie Antoinette with the classical segue into Siouxsie & The Banshees "Hong Kong Garden" is something to behold! You just know that this meant something to Sofia Coppola when she was a kid. This is real music taste, a real statement.

Well, I think I don't know 1% of the lyrics of Purple Rain.
And I didn't like the movie, and I don't like Prince's works. I've listenned to a lot of Prince due to many people enthusiasm, but I've never found him that funky or sexy, maybe he's a great musician but I don't feel him at all.

steve hoffman and kevin gray just remastered this at 45 rpm at acoustec studios and the sound is phenomenal. i have a needledrop of it that sounds better than i have ever heard it.
if anyone is interested in it, hit me up on a pm and i'll convert it to a 320kbps mp3 and upload it somewhere.

Co-sign! That opening scene with the junkies is what made me a soundtrack fanatic, to this day! Little Child-Running wild played against the backdrop of real ghetto streets- pure Genius.
Menace II society gets my vote too, because these guys knew when to insert songs and when to cut them off. Love the Al green track playing while they're planning the driveby.
