actually, i take that back. i found a couple of good spots.
1. sabarros in mid town is pretty cool,
2. joint accross the street from the church near vinylmania is cool too.
3. there is small family own pizza joint in mid town that is very good too, but have not been able to find it my past two trips to nyc. i wonder if they went under? forgot the name.

Los Angeles pizza is absolutely BLASPHEMOUS. I found the one joint in Los Feliz that has a bit better than average, tolerably better, and even there, it's hit or miss depending upon who is in the kitchen.
What's worse, LA people are so far west, to them EVERYTHING is BACK EAST.
"This pizza sucks! I've got to get some Chicago pizza in me fast." "Oh...you're from BACK EAST too?" "Uh...naw. I'm from CHICAGO. You know, the Chicago that ruined Pat Ewing. That Chicago." "Yea, that's what I said... BACK EAST." "Shut up and eat your counterfeit New York pizza."

The pizza down here is nothing but bread cheese a something they think is tomato sause.
Before I went on my diet, the only pizza I would buy was a big New Yorker from Pizza Hut, and that was shitty too.
You can't even get a coke and a slice down here without people lookin at you like you're cheap or somethin.

But I love the Hot Dogs in Chicago. I had some really good pizza in New York and some bad. I had a really good ho dog in NY,but different than Chicago. Pizzeria Ora's in Chicago is amazing - I had about 5 heart attacks right after I ate there though. NYC style pizza is nice too, as long as they use good ingredients and have a real wood burning brick oven.

I lived there for 7 years and never really found a decent pizzaria. Some were obviously better than others but never found one that really did it for me. They make the shit real soggy there and New Yorkers must like that sh*t hot too because I'd be blowing on the slice for like 10 minutes. And you lift up and the chesse slides right off. And everybody raves about Joe's in the Village like it's some institution or something. That stuff was wack.

Tottonno's in Coney Island is really good.
Last time I was in Chicago, I went to some Pizza joint where you could write on anything (tables, chairs, walls, etc.)
Supposedly, they were supposed to have the best pizza in Chicago.
That shit was DISGUSTING! A big ugly pile of greese, cheese and dough. (Doug would have loved it). No flavor at all. Are there no Italians in Chicago?

My other half raves about Chicago pizza been the shit, and it is really good but to me pizza is pizza. Granted some are better than others but I can't really get too excited about it.
There was a little place in NY called Rays by Cafe Habana which served wicked pizza as good as any I have had, but the only thing I have to compare it to is Perfect Pizza, and Pizza Hut so I am no real judge.
One thing I do know is y'all love your junk food, and you are very defensive of your home treats! It's a bit like we are over fish, and chips. There's loadsa fish n' chip shops here but only a few do them well.
From Chicago I loved that cheesy popcorn it's Le bomb,

Actually, it seems to me that the Mexicans make the best pies in NYC these days. I, personally, do not like Chicago deep ish. In fact, the one time I had it authentically (in Chi) ruin mozerella for me for life. I can now only eat it in small quantities. I can't even eat cheese sticks.
The neighborhood pizzaria is gonna be your best bet. Forget the chains (Domino's, Pizza Hut, even Sbarros -- which I find too greasy). I agree that Ray's was a disappointment, as was Ray Bari's. But again I say, chains are not the best.
I also agree about Southern Pizza. Haven't found any yet that was worth the price.
Sorry to those who don't like NYC Pizza, but that just leaves more for us.

Pizza shops in little Italy (http://www.littleitalynyc.com/restaurants.asp)
Historical information on the History of Pizza (http://pizzatherapy.com/historyo.htm)
The Food Network had a nice documentary on American made Pizzas, the story of the first pizza shop opened by Gennaro Lombardi, Chicago style pizzas, and the big chains Pizza Hut and Dominos (BOOOOOOO!! graemlins/rofl.gif ).
It's funny because everytime I drive up to NYC, the moment I hit Manhattan, I'm lookin for some pizza. I do it everytime, park my car and start lookin for some hot pizza. When you're stuck eating the crap we have down south, there's nothing to describe the feeling that comes over me when I take a bite of a York Peppermint....sorry, a nice large slice of pizza!!!

Jesū, ya'll ain't right...I feel compelled to post. Most of the pizza in your regular Joe spot leaves something to be desired, its a big compromise, what do you value most? Not enough attention paid to the overwhelming amount of dough (deep dish by definition is not pizza its focaccia) and the disgusting amount of fake mozzarella used! You are supposed to have more tomato sauce than mozzarella! And your sauce, your sauce has to be good. Things like sour/tart tomatoes, tomatoes burnt in a pot etc all can ruin your sauce as well as imbeciles that add sugar to it to take out the tartness of a bad tomato! Hint: most pizzeria joints don't make their sauce they buy it pre-fab so to speak, horrors...check, do they have a kitchen in the back with a stove to make a sauce, if not then they ain't makin it!
When buying by the slice (that's another american thing which has made its way back to Italy!!) you can't control nuttin' but if you are ordering the whole thing watch em' while they make it, help them out, give them some direction. Start by telling them to pull off 1/3 the dough, get rid of it or take it home and make zeppole. When they are stretching the dough it has to go to the END of the pizza pan, and I do mean the end, stretched see-thru thin. Then the sauce drops in the middle and gets spread out to the sides in a CIRCULAR motion, I've seen em drop it and go up and down :( when cooked the ends are crispy, the center should be undercooked, a shade, just a teeny shade raw, its not for the american palate but that's the truth of it. The mozzarella, in moderate amounts, repeat small to moderate amounts should be fresh, if it is fresh its gonna drip liquid therefore diluting the sauce some more, that's a good thing. On TOP of that goes the olive oil, HEARTY full tasting olive oil dripped on with a decanter that has a long, thin, flute-like spout, it controls the amount that lands on your pizza, again in a CIRCULAR motion and that's it. Ok maybe a leaf or two of fresh basil but that's it. All the toppings are relatively new-fangled bells and whistles that mask the fact that they are using a tasteless mozarella, or an oil that is not full bodied or worse yet a bad sauce. Pizza margherita, Neapolitan pizza that's pizza.
I agree that Totonno's in Coney Island on Neptune Ave. (I think around West 15th or 16th..)is made well nuyokah style but they're only open Wed - Sun and not late, maybe till 8pm or so. If you are out for the Mermaid Parade over on the next block (Surf Avenue) on June 21st get your butt in there and have some!
The square thick stuff has its roots in Sicilian pizza rustica and/or focaccia depending how strongly you feel about it, maybe a bunch of Sicialians migrated to Chicago, who knows....it can be made well but again its not pizza Margherita. Dominoes, Pizza Hut etc. I'm speechless, that's not pizza.

I'm sure it's a matter of tastes. I guess I'm biased because I live in NY and I like NY pizza. I will have to go to Chicago to taste Chicago pizza, because the Chicago style made in NY is not all that. The same goes with Cajun food made in New York. I will never eat Cajun outside of New Orleans. Peace.
