View Full Version : re Shelter topic and all the economical references
Am I the only one annoyed about the references to money, "customers", trying to hold people accountable, etc... It kind of puts a bad taste around such a wonderful experience Shelter is. Note that I didn't call Shelter a "party", a "club" but an experience. I have a feeling that some peope regularly come out to criticize Shelter under the guise of a so-called "positive criticism" while most of what they are doing in pointing towards the negative side. The way you say things have an impact on the way people will perceive your message.
The first time I went to Shelter, Timmy wasn't playing. And my first reaction was "who's playing", but then I moved on, because I was having the Shelter experience. It was actually Hippie Torrales playing. And I didn't go back to the cashier to ask my money back. I had travelled 600 kilometers (whatever that is in miles, perhaps 400). The Shelter doesn't end with the dj. It's the people and it's the feeling.
All these references to "I paid so much" and "I traveled 200 miles" make me sick. To try to give the experience a monetary aspect is quite simply going against the whole institution. If I was in Robbi's shoes, I'd pretty much feel the same anger he felt when reading that thread. (JamesD, if you're reading this, the last sentence was not aimed at a possible DHP mix, rather an eventual gig at Shelter ;) I have higher standards :D ).
Customer this, accountable that, fvck that. I thought Shelter was about friends, not customers.

I traveled 850 miles in my car alone with 3 Mountain Dews and a full bladder of piss, payed for the "EXPERIENCE" and I will never forget it.
This makes me wonder who are the cool people supporting the scene that do not post on this board because I found a few this weekend. Some of you guys make the NYC house scene look shitty with all the bitching going on.
I wonder why no one bitched about the rain at a and excellent "FREE" party in Prospect Park last september with a great DJ Line Up and food, but you bitch about 25 measly dollars for an event that was well worth the money for most of the people who attended.
The only complaint I had about the SHelter was the damn heat on the main floor, but I got over that with the quickness.
Peace
Gee Willikers.

perhaps the reason why this is such a hot topic is because the shelter is the most highly esteemed club around - their rep is strong, when they say someone is going to be there, based on past events the person usually shows and plays
no one wants to recognise the business aspect of the whole process - house is a feeling, yes but only AFTER you pay your money at the door.
next time i go ill say "sorry i don't want to pay my 20 bucks - i just got layed off and after all isn't house a feeling?"
wonder how well that will go over
we can get all happy and smiley and talk about how house is a feeling not a business transaction
but bottom line the next time Shelter advertises something why should anyone believe it?
Without communication and honesty people are just gonna assume the worst - that there was never any intention of putting the DJ's they printed on the flyer to perform.
is that the truth? probably not but until someone somewhere makes a statement to the contrary that's what im gonna believe
the other thing that strikes me about this whole sitaution is the arrogence on the part of the shelter - hey maybe they are right and they will be successful until the end of time - good luck to them -
however i bet if there was another major player in town they and the people surrounding it wouldn't be so quick to tell people to fuk off and never come back.
yeah house is a feeling
you don't like it?
fuk off and never come back
what you want an apology? fuk your apology.
ah... feel the good vibes.

also GU this isn't really about the show itself - its about the next show - when the shelter tells people that so-and-so is gonna DJ how can i be sure that's the truth?
maybe i just don't get it. maybe im wrong and everyone else is right there is no difference between Frankie and Glen, no difference between Jazzy and Spinna, no difference between Danny and Phil.
perhaps if GU didn't have so many dope releases on shelter records there wouldn't be so much anticipation to see him in that venue.
in the end all i want is an answer - why didn't the DJ's advertised show?
is that so hard? an answer? or is that disrespectful to come to the great and powerful OZ with such a request.
lil ray told me that the explanation you seek would just be more fodder for you to destroy the shelter.

wonder how well that will go over have you tried this or something close to this("I don't have it this week, but I really wanna release")? Until you have, your analogy is flawed. Trust me, this has been done, with success...even last Sat.
now you are just reaching for crap to throw on the wall and to see what will stick....

Speaking of the "experience"...
Shit sound, mix cds instead of DJs cause summerstage couldn't get thier act together, LLV and EOL walking off stage, Phil Asher and GU and others not playing, Chaka's daughter performing a bunch of shit songs that no one cared about, too hot, people didn't get the promised food, etc.
If this is supposed to be some sort of sacred experience, consider me an athiest.

I guess next week we will see a thread about not enough places in NYC to go on a Sat. nite....

lil ray truthfully i never tried it -
and also i don't want to be on the side of "shelter bashing"
believe me when i say i truely love the shelter and one of my goals in life is to be return to the city of my birth for good and go there every damn week. really.
if you say that is something that happens at the door i will believe you and be impressed with that fact, just like i am impressed with the massive effort that went into this weekend.
sigh... i guess there are some questions that will just go unanswered. Ill shut up now
