I was thinking about locking at first but I think if you're scare you should twist then. Twist is gives more diversity than anything. I loved my damn twist at $60.00 a pop but I got lazy again and didn't keep them up. You should have seen it when I wore the twist out (when you actually take the twist out with your fingers without washing) It was so dramatic! Twist are the same look as locks I think but aren't permanent. You digg!:):)

Actually though, it's a self thing. Nobody is going to look like everybody else because believe it or not we all have different types of hair. My hair is very tightly coiled and jet black. It's beautiful and it scares the shit out of most white people and black girls when I wear it to. I get to caught up by the power it brings by the afro and the big hoop thing. I had this chick at work calling me Angela Davis for two weeks and it got pretty annoying after a while. Inside though I loved it because it was the real me and what god gave me. I never knew it could cause so much drama though especially at the job.

lock yo shit up. i have dark hair, been called angela davis the whole nine. the thoughts of locking my hair expanded over 7 years until i finally did it a few months back. my moms has it sister and yadda yadda. my hair isnt completely locked but it aint far from it. i think its beautiful and i have never received so many compliments.
when i first started twistin it my job decided to come out with a new dress code. in it had this wriiten in bold letters with the shit underlined. "NO DREADLOCKS". now, being the only black female...being the only black person period... being the only person in the office with locks i felt the shit was directed torwards me. i talked to my boss and said if they dont change that shit a lawsuit would be pending... its no longer there and it was the dumbest way to single a queen out.
anywho...i lost my point somewhere...long story short... locks are beautiful, natural is beautiful, afros are beautiful.... i dont gives a flyin fock what people think nor should you. people wanna say dumb shit like ...you look like this that or the other...it aint nuttin.

Wow. Someone in your office must have been itching for a lawsuit to install such a ridiculous policy as that. Many people celebrate their heritage in their manner of dress and appearance at work, and it's never seems to be a problem.
Also, you're right. We do love it!

Funny you should mention this. I have been letting the fro grow at the job with intention of getting twists which will eventually grow into locks. i want to keep them at a respectable length (around 4 to 5 inches). Its long enough at the moment to start the twists and I wanted to get it twisted for the holidays but I have an second interview for a new position within the same company and I wasnt sure i sure get it twisted for the second interview. My corporate culture is pretty relaxed, however i didnt think it would go over well in the interview. Any hiring managers out there? What say you and what has been your experience at work. BTW I work at an HVAC company

Really thinking, what is holding you back from doing your hair the way you want it just because of an interview? I'm interested in knowing your thoughts about this because whenever I'm about to go to to a meeting or something, I get a little nervous about my hair being in a fro. I had one woman, as soon as me and my boss walked in she jumped and said "I love your hair!" I was upset because this is not a fashion statement, a joke, or a topic of conversation. The biggest thing to is the shit I get from my own people. I could never lived without a perm! God you are so brave! I said well it means you can't live with yourself. :jpshakehead:

There isn't so much an "ugly" phase as there is a fuzzy phase. I have locked twice and the style options are as open as your creativity. Sisterlocks are expensive to keep for many people because maintenance has to be done by a stylist. On the other hand, because the locks are essentially your own hair crocheted into micro locks you skip a lot of the fuzzy phase... Finally as a person who has worn twists and locks, they are different to maintain and they "wear" differently, I do not consider them interchangeable.

I'm rocking an afro now.. I had locs for 12yrs.. love the different styles I can make.. but after a while, I was missing the look of my hair.. I wanted to comb and brush, and run my fingers through my hair.. :)
soooo I picked up the zizzers and on a cold February night..I Cut them off.. a strange feeling came over me as I was cutting them off.. I was feeling lighter, it felt strange, I had to get use to it.. I went to my sisters shop and had her give me a nice shape up and trim on top.. I had that perfect shape like back in the day, I rock my big earrings, to give it that 70's style.. :) lol.. now I just wash, condition, put some nice smelling oil and hair food.. and a little twist and loc gel .. then Bam!! my Fro is set.. I get the "Gee Your Hair Grows Fast" Your afro is Big!! lol
the bigger it gets the boss says.. "How Big are You gonna Let it Grow"
I say.. "Like Chaka Khan's" full Why?? :)

actually....I am just waiting.....once i get the position imma go ahead and let it flow. I dont think it will be a determining factor...but Imma wait until after the interview to get it done. I think most of my co workers would not mind...in fact there is one sister that has like 8 to 9 inch locks that are died red that holds a pretty respectable position within the company. She is one a only i would say 6 or 7 blacks within the our office of about 75 people including myself. I just think that I should tone it down and look my best for the interview. just a personal choice is all....BTW since u are already gainfully employed and like yoiur hair natural go ahead and do ur thang and never let anyone talk you out of it

I'm sensing an air of self-doubt in your comments. If it is of your "personal choice" to lock...just do it. The vestiges of our subjegation in this country plays itself out on a daily basis here in America in so-called "corporate" culture.
Why would you want to "tone down" who you are. Where is it written that the natural man and natural woman "tone things down" for any terrestrial body???
When we were in our natural state as free men and women we wore our hair in multitudes of hairstyles and were heads of the corporations of the day and age.
It's just that when our LEGAL STATUS was reduced to NEGRO is when we stopped being our natural selves and we have been trying to cope with this status ever since.

King Solomon had locs, Queen of Sheba, Moses. all of the Greek queens, the list goes on, growing locs is a choice to me.. not a decision.. it has to come from the inside of you.. it's not for a fashion statement.. but a spiritual one.. You are holding on to your memories, you hold on to them until you're ready to let Go,some people never cut theirs, and some might be working on their 3rd time locing.. But I learned while I had them.. and one thing I remember is if the person who is doing the hair has bad Ora.. then the locs will become to be and look like that persons feelings, Ugly.. the hair is responsive to what we do to it.. if the person is negative..and never let people touch your hair just to be touching it.. "Why you gotta feel it"
Hair is the Tree that grows from the root of You.. so make Your Choice, if you keep changing your mind.. it must be that you Really deep down inside don't want them.. and if it's because of what People will say how you look.. ??? Why do it.
once you Loc.. You Will Like the Look.. but it's up to You..
Peace

Thank you all for your input and thought provoking statements about locking. I am now wishing I had done it years ago because the reason I went natural in the first place is so very special to me. I will all ways carry the fond memories I have of my maternal grandmother who had never had any chemicals in her hair.....upon her passing I decided to go natural...
On a brighter note SweetiLuv has offered to twist my hair and that woman exudes nothing but posititity...I am set for 08'...:respent:

After much cajoling, I finally convinced my Mom to go natural and she wears an gorgeous Afro.
After years of pressing and perming, she is somewhat awed at the compliements she is given by various ethnicities since she's allowed her hair to return to it's NATURAL state.

I have been thinking of locking for a few years now.....I keep hearing about the "UGLY" stage...what are the pros and cons? I love being natural, how much diversity will LOCKs give me?:conf44:
Next year will be 7 years for me and I haven't thought about cutting. I have honestly never had a regret for locking. And in opinion there is no "ugly" stage in my opinion. I have loved every single stage that I have gone through. I started out with the lil twist and 7 years later my locs are almost waist length...good luck with your decision...

Its intresting how things have come full circle in life, when I was a child of about 5 or 6, my father took me to the barbershop and cut all my hair off. He was going thru his "Say it loud Im black and Im proud" phaze.
http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb31/celestethedj/scan0001.jpg
I trully hatted it! I was Taunted Teased and mistaken for a boy for years (untill breast came along for me) Now Im older wiser and have a need for simplicity. Locks,I have considered but dont think they are for me. Twist I like, and while in the shop getting a perm one day,I discovered the lady in the back of the shop doing twist, with a twist. They look and last like french braids, but have a fashionalble flair to them. started "twisting" 7 months ago,I think Ive found my look!
http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb31/celestethedj/2007-09-30_0035.jpg
My point is,we as sisters have a natural beauty that surpasses time, and once we go thru, and get thru all of the misconceptions that society dictates thru out our lives, about how we should look we will get to the point where we finally say, I love the Queen in me! Then we can find our Identities and our "looks". LOCK IT UP GURL! I bet it will do nothing but radiate the "QUEENDOM" you Possess. When Our Outsides start to match up to our Insides and Both are equally beautiful, and acceptable to ourselves, thats when we WIN the Battle!
