After a 17-hour day of working at our conference in Atlanta, I was BEAT, but knew Sat night was my chance to check out MJQ in Atlanta. I had every intention of getting there at 11:30 and leaving at no later than 1am. I had a meeting to hit at 7am.

I arrived at MJQ at 11:30pm...and finally (and regretfully) dragged myself away at 3am.

If you get down to Atlanta, definitely check out MJQ on Saturday night. I really didnt know what to expect, but I wasn't expecting things to be as good as I experienced. Great turnout. Diverse crowd age and ethnicity-wise. Very good selection of music (casscade...did you go? was that dj language spinning?). Great dancers. Cool venue. It was the perfect closing to a long, often frustrating day.

I realized at MJQ that my perspective on the "house scene" can often be too focused on what is happening locally in DC and what happens in NYC and Chicago (because that seems to be primarily what is discussed here on DHP). It was refreshing to be somewhere else, see new faces, new DJs (and it was cool to not know even who the DJs were), new venues, and new or at least different energy. Yeah, I need to get out and away more, but to new-to-me spots.

If the DJ from MJQ on Sat 8/17 is on here...thanks for a great night. I needed it bad.

Good post and I'm glad you were able to "Travel" to see a different light on the scene.

I wish I could get up there more often because my experiences with MJQ were always positive and regreshing!!

Peace

Glad you had fun Darrow ...
I know I've been thinking of traveling more ...
Especially now that Doug's going away to law school. graemlins/mecry.gif

I think DJ Kemit does Saturdays at MJQ. He's the man in ATL.

Club Eleven 50 may be an option as well...lots of underground music being played there.

I got a Muslim brotha who tells
me that MJQ is the spot
in Atlanta. I am sure to make
it one day as the sista
population is thick enough
to satisfy my eyes, 15 fold....

He's said that Dj Kemit does spin
there and from his description, I get the immediate idea of it being like the Shelter.

It's always good to see
people doing it elsewhere.

Does Kai still spin down there or
is he still in Detroit? Anyone?

darrow you never called me!
i ended up going to traxx and to red's party. language was the guest dj at mjq saturday night but i didn't make it over there at all. :(
out of all the clubs mjq definitely has the most diverse crowd in ATL. we're having a Bang The Party with e-man soon.

yes kai is still spinning out as well as kemit. i can't keep up with their residencies much anymore!

eleven50 USED to be the spot, but now that crowd has moved across the street to the Crescent Room since the club got new owners and turned wack. even though they did have larry heard a few weeks ago it still sucks and i don't go there anymore.

darrow while you were at mjq i was at TRAXX! a black gay club, mostly male. and a hidden secret to most of the house community here. i had heavy doubts going into the club but they were playing soulful, banging, tribal house in the main room. no cher or madonna circuit mixes! there was a group of dancers STEP dancing on stage to house music...something completely new to my eyes.

yes STEP dancing like how the black frats do. except it was house.

no one bothered us. one of the straight guys who i went with said that he even felt comfortable after hanging out for an hour. though i did have to escort him to the bathroom.

as we were walking out of traxx my friend said "now THAT reminds me of the Shelter!"

the DL culture was in full effect.
