Today marks the 20th anniversary of Harold Washington being elected mayor of Chicago. Chicago became a much more different city for the better. Programs like community active policing (CAPS), universal neigborhood improvement (even areas where Harold wasn't liked), immediate disbursements of trucks for snow cleanups, city hall visits, public municipal budget hearings, and parking ticket amnesty along with diversification were among many of the things Harold did to change Chicago into a more livable city. His untimely death (Steve Cokely considers it murder) still haunts this city to this day. Richard J. Daley said he'd never run for mayor as long as Harold was alive. The day Harold died, Daley said "all bets are off" and ran for mayor and has been dictator (can you say Meigs Field?) , I mean mayor ever since Eugene "I didn't wanna be mayor in the first place" Sawyer resigned. Harold Washington, you'll never be forgotten ;)

I believe that he was about to start a Black Machine in Chicago after reelection. Having said that, he apparently died of a heart attack while eating. I wonder if someone slipped some "good stuff" in the A1 Steak Sauce???? graemlins/jpshakehead.gif
Excuse the conspiracy theory, but...

I remember my mother and father were so happy to see Harold in office. My father actually took me to meet Harold at City Hall in 1985. You used to be able to just walk right into the mayor's office. With Daley, that impossible.

Excuse the conspiracy theory, but... You're not the only one with the conspiracy thought. And they're not unwarranted. Like I mentioned earlier, Cokely felt Harold's "heart attack" was a setup. Cokely was Harold's right-hand man throughout the mid 80s. According to Harold's toxicology report, his heart was three times it's normal size. Now, your heart is about the size of your fist. I magine having three fist fists in your chest when it's only made for one. Your heart wouldn't just swell up overnight, and you' also have some tight of rubbing or discomfort. Washington had no previous heart problems. Something doesn't add up. There's a book out called "The Day I Watched the Mayor Die" by a guy named Lipton (I can't remember his first name). Lipton was the last guy to see Harold alive and explained how Washington literally died while he just looked. In addition, it was also noted that when A.A. Raynor Funeral Home took Harold's body the the burial ground, there was no heart in it. A guy named Dr. Stein was the last physician to be in posession of Harold's heart. The heart will tell you how Harold was killed, just like John Kennedy's brain, which is also still missing.
