Meaning, are you

A) Picking music that you want to hear

B) Picking music that you think WON'T be on other DJ's mix CDs

C) Picking music you think the recipients of the CD won't already have

D) all of the above

E) none of the above

For me, I usually just put down the stuff that I want to hear. Mostly new records that I have, be they recent releases or older stuff I recently got hold of. I never think about my mix CD in relation to others out there. In a way, I think of my years of mix tapes/CDs as some kind of record of what I was listening to/playing at that given moment in time. What's your thought process?

I record music that I want to hear which is pretty much out of necessity since I'm about the only one that's going to hear it. LOL I believe that some consideration for the recipient is in order though. I was thinking of submitting a mix to Barry McFarlane and in that case I would try to play something a little different from what others there are playing. One good thing is that there's so much good music that it's not hard to differentiate yourself.

I usually just hit record.I prefer to play out than make cd's.I have not made a mix cd in months.I made about 10 in a 3 month period and they have done me some good.

I usually have porno, politics and square dancing in my mind when i make cds.

This is why my cds are sexy, socially conscious affairs that are easy to dance to. graemlins/bighug.gif

Nice topic. I have found myself, on occasion, making a cd with a particular audience in mind which unfortunately does not seem to bode well as far as the finish product is concerned. So now I try to just play good music, whether it's old, new, unreleased or whateva.

I am in a unique position to be able to play primarily what I like because 1. when I play what I like I play it passionately and 2. the people that buy my cd's like what I like so it works out. ;)

This topic brings up a good point which may or may not have been discussed and that is, should you play music you don't like simply because the crowd likes/wants it?

I try and play music that i enjoy....If I enjoy it then i play it with more energy and with passion...

My mix cd's tend to reflect also how I feel at a given moment ...also ..always trying to make sure the music is interesting...

I try not to be a selfish DJ...

nothing worse in my opinion... :(

For me I make a cd yo get a message or a vibe across I want to get across. If I get a request I try to incoroporate what the buyer wants. To me it's all about flow. Imho if it doesen't flow you are just playing music, shooting in the dark....

Even though I haven't made a Cd in a while now I tend look at the tracks as being a trip to different places and using the music the fits that destination whether it's an old or new cut.

This topic brings up a good point which may or may not have been discussed and that is, should you play music you don't like simply because the crowd likes/wants it? there was a topic a while ago about the differences between mixing a cd and playing live.

from my own experiences i would have to say there is a big difference, though it took me sometime to get it through my thick skull graemlins/conf44.gif

should you play music you don't like simply because the crowd likes/wants it? well, i tend to now look at the overall perfomance of my live sets than nit picking about the individual songs i play. sometimes one has to give and take.

as far as the original question. i think of 2 things "mostly" when i make a mix; songs that i am feeling and creating a vibe.

I don't think house DJs have to play songs they don't like, as there is really much less of a "weekly top 10" the way there is with hip hop. There are just so many tunes you can play and, thankfully, house crowds are very respectful of the DJ and rarely make requests (at least in NY, Can't speak for elsewhere...). Hip hop is a different story. At most gigs, people are coming up top you all damn night asking for the same 3 records, and if you don't have them people may start beefing.

I pick a record and go from there. Mostly spontaneous..Just like at a party.
