damn, making GWB-type* jokes! i'm a bit disappointed ...
(* for those who don't know, GWB has smirkingly waved at Stevie Wonder on not one but TWO occasions ...)
From the NYTimes write-up:
The discerning Essence Festival audience, however, is not the easiest crowd to play to, as Erykah Badu, the idiosyncratic soul singer, found out on opening night. She strode slowly onstage with a stick of clove-smelling incense burning in her mouth, calm and in control. But her cool facade soon cracked as the audience sat still and responded only tepidly to her singing.
"What are you yawning for?" she asked one audience member. "You're too old to be here anyway."
To get the audience on its feet, she played songs by Dr. Dre and Zapp from her CD player, but it helped only marginally. "I hope you all don't treat Stevie Wonder like this when he's out here," Ms. Badu said. Then she added that he wouldn't know anyway since he can't see the audience.
