View Full Version : G-Man = DJ Discotizer??
discussion on discotizer mix at discomusic.com
some dude says this about discotizer..
"The guy obviously specialises in extending segments of the same track........quite badly!!!
Double beats, not coming in at the right place etc, etc.
Ultimately pretty boring 'cos for me he overdoes it. I don't thinks it's live 'cos it sounds like an exercise in mixing (today's philosophy?) rather than playing to a crowd.
IMO: This must be the result of someone raised on House music and not from the era.
Possible clue to identity of Discotizer: the file just says Gerard Rose (owner of the site) whereas most of the other mixes have the DJ's name in the real player box. Could it be one of his?"

Well, I think that this guy's technical analysis is way off. I can't imagine that there were even a fraction of the scrutinizing trainspotters out there in the late 70's as there are now in the new, jock-riding millenium. The coked-up, Discotheque haunting revellers of those days wouldn't have recognized, let alone given a shit about a double beat. And why does he have to have a goddamned specialty? This is only ONE set that people have heard of this jock; out of how many? No one knows. So this "anal"ist concludes that his lacking technical acumen suggests that he was raised on House music? I'm mean... really. How many House jocks do you know that have or even know about these records, that would agree to remain anonynous amid the worlwide interest?
I think Discotizer could easily have been Walter Gibbons.

John, you really are on the money. It sure in the hell could be Walter Gibbons.
Man,I have some of those old disco mix lps from the 70's and some of the blends were terrible, trainwrecks and all.Folks still grooved. It the damn geeks who are messing shit up nowadays. No respect for those who were pioneers.Someone had to create the form of back-cueing,phasing,repeats.Damn,some cats just don't get it.
Then to dis it and say the person must have been a house dj???I am going to go over to that board and have some fun....

My guess is that anyone trying to imitate Walter Gibbons, Herc etc... In the late 70's could have done this.
I wish there were more tapes around, but those sets were not based on perfection, they were based on experimentation. And crowd feedback.
They still inspired the hell out of anyone in earshot.

Fellas I don't think stating that Dj's didn't know a double beat or care back then is completely off. I know I didn't start mixing smoothly till 75 but I still new a double beat when I heard it. I did bang or slip que ( as some people call it ) and for that you had to be extremely tight in your musical beats knowledge. Just my 2 cents. Not all DJ's were into " not mixing " and being smooth! Peace Baby

Back then they didn't have the benefit of the 1200 or bpm counters or Pioneer mixers. It was more like a mini studio in the DJ booth. You have to realise that back then up until the late 80's they had,by even the 90's standards, very primitive equipment like reels and outboard fx and eq's. The DJ had what he had and not too much else exept for his records and tapes. He had to put them together somehow. Back then it was about the music and the mood, not about impressive tricks(even though much respect to them guys like Grandmaster Flash and all the scratchmasters since then). I love the mood he creates. Peace.
I don't care who it is. The music is good. Period.

For a person that didn't like it , they certainly spent enough time listening and checking details on the Author etc, whoever it is, they sound bitter about something, why didn't he listen decide he didn't like and move on I wonder.
